I read in many posts and road tests about road noise on the I30. I hope we are not covering old ground. Rather then change tyres (tires) size traction etc.  In the near future I plan to install sound damping insulation from B-OUIET.COM  For underhood (hliner) for interior  (extreme). I have done this before in other  cars, trucks, and heavy equiment. bottom line - any thingthat attacks the body over long periods of time wears it out. ( ie noise)
It also makes the sound system sound SO much better!   COST appox.   150us dollars plus your labor.  any thoughts on this ?

I've put dynamat on the floor of mine, pulled out all the interior and did a decent job of it, took a full day but worth it, next plan is the doors and eventually the hoodlining.

95% of the road noise is the tyres.
  • 2009 manual sx hatch and 2009 automatic sx cw. both 2.0 petrol.

Of course the road noise is mainly tyres- its all about insulating the body from that noise passing through it. i.e. the floor, wheel arches, doors.   It wont make wind noise any quiter (the I30 isnt too bad in this area thoguh not as good as some cars).

But even the most expensive tyres will have noise, particularly in 35 series 18 inch.

As mentioned sound proofing also makes a difference for audio systems, removing a lot of the lower frequencies causing drumming sound- eliminate that and you get improved bass response from the audio where road noise and bass compete- you get a perceived loss of bass (in reality its an increase in bass noise versus bass sound.

If a decent sub system is installed or even decent component speakers with good bass response- then sound proofing helps eliminate body rattles and resonation - use a test disc which has a sweeping frequency and you soon realise at certain Hz parts of your car start rattling.

You're a keener man than me, bobbyd......
I'd just turn the stereo up a bit more to cover up the noise..... :D

bobbyd thanks for pics and you have confirmed what i'm planning to do with my car. In the old days we used heavy roofing tar paper and chalk- glue ( cheap and works well ) low end road noise and bass compete so any isolation of them makes a big impact on the final sound of the radio. maybe i'll just change the tires and turn up the radio. lol  thx

thanks Duke- i couldnt find the product on their web site.  Needless to say sound deadening is heavy and so usually means freight is expensive from O.S.

Bobbyd understand about freight saw dynamat today at audio store 36 sg. ft ( 4X4 sg.)  250.00 us   ( APPOX. 7 BUCKS A FOOT) can be found cheaper on e-bay! or direct from dynamat plus shipping. as in an older post heavy roofing paper works well and cheap.

Wow, now that's a LOT of Dynamat. How much did the car weigh before and after that little expedition??

I used Dynamat (or maybe a cheaper brother of said product, can't remember) on my 2006 Getz, behind the speakers and the doors, which made a significant difference. I cannot believe you went to that much trouble!!

Hi all have had both standard and now slx alloys on vehicle, the standard rims that ran hankooks were very quite, but when i bought the alloys from another member the alloys came with kumho,s now they are a very noisy tyre. I suppose what im trying to say is when you buy your next set ask the dealler how much road noise do the tyres put out most of them are pretty good and will inform you on how much road noise the tyres put out and if not you should return and tell them where to place them and get a replacement set

That surprises me being as Hankook and Kumho are virtually the same tyre (very close sister companies)

It might be party due to the lower profile.

We had 16" Alloys with kumho Optimo on our SLX CRDi .. the wife (TrishCW) now has kumho Solus 15" on her CW (I think the 15" are a bit quieter than the 16" were) but no back to back comparison as we traded the CRDi about 4 months before we got the CW... :undecided:

A bit to do with the profile dazz, but mostly, different tread patterns.

Also, asking the dealer about the effects of tyres on road noise is a difficult one, because pretty well every car and tyre/wheel combo will give different results. Then there are the different road surfaces people frequent.
Some tyres are noisy, regardless as we've discovered on here. But others can be quiet on one car and noisy on another - even in one celbrated case we had in Innisfail many years ago. One Holden Statesman - noisy as all get out. Dealer took tyres off and fitted an alternative, fixing the problem. The next week an identical Statesman came in. As an experiment he re-fitted the (noisy) tyres. Quiet and as smooth as you could ask for.

There were no doubt some differences in the rubber bushes. Maybe different suppliers to GMH?
