Neptune,Yes I remember the gravity bowl pumps well,I still remember going out on jobs with the Ol'man when he worked for HC sleighs, which then turned into Golden fleece, delivering 44 gallon drums to a lot of rural service station there where no pumps,I have no idea what Ki-gass is either.

Asterix
Yes all trailers over here(non industrial)weighing over 750Kgs must be fitted with electric brakes,or a decent hyrolic system, for convenience, most choose electric, hydrolic in my opinion on small domectic trailer units are far to high maintainance, the old vaccum over hydrolic went out years ago,I installed my controller today and like I said, the whole combination now stops on a freakin sixpence,I di have some pic's I took today with everything hooked up.

Thanks for the pix Rick.. If you follow the Tutorial in the Welcome thread you will see how to post bigger pictures by hosting them (and avoid the risk of having them lost)

Neptune
That was taken last year when we did a trip to Hervay Bay in Bruce, some Koala sancruary in Brissie somewhere, bought Bruce on a Monday, clocked up the first thousand K's in four days, got him serviced on the Saturday and headed off on the Monday, did a further 14000 K's in seven weeks,we had that much crap in the car I had to buy a rooftop box for the trip home, got a pictue of that somewhere to.

im looking at using my familys i30 to drive down from brisbane to Port Maquarie (NSW) to pickup a cuore (small car) and tow it back up on a car trailer...
I can see people have towed caravans and trailers here but would a 08 SLX auto i30 be okay to tow a 700kg cuore + trailer? I was planning on using my R31 but with older cars like mine the chassis is known to stretch and rather use a new cars hence using the familys i30 which also has a new towbar fitted (says its rated to 1200kg but that's 'recommended', should be okay to tow a 700kg car + trailer alright?)

Not sure whether you have a deisel or petrol, not even sure what your total weights going to be, load and trailer, but your going to have to make sure you have brakes fitted to your trailer, I personally would not go much more than 1000- 1100 kgs myself just to give myself a safety buffer, but I know power wise with our deisel, you hardly know the trailer is there and as I stated in an earleir post, with the electric brakes fitted and now adjusted correctly, the whole thing from 90-100 Kph pulls up fully loaded straight and true in just a little over three times it's own length, most pre 2000 cars can't even do that with just their own weight.

yeah I have a petrol... the only thing is that im hoping the trailers you hire from servos are old style with brakes... because I dont have the money to install that electric braking unit thing.

most trailers built to carry more than 500kg have the inertia braking system that work quiet well

^ yeah that's what I need
But yeah in general, are all car trailers really 800kg as they said they are? or are they more like ~ 400-700?

Lightest car trailer I ever hired was a tad under 680kgs, it's compliance plate said it was 550 kgs,I don't trust compliance plates, my dog trailer was made by a proffesional trailer body builder there is even a discrepancy on it's compliance plate

Natto
Not that sure about the petrol, but the onboard computer on my deisel tells me at 90-100 KPH I'm using between 6.5 to 9 ltrs/100,better than our old wagon which when towing uses dang near 18  ltrs per hundred, but I suspect if your easy on the throttle you should be able to keepit down to 7-8 ltrs a 100.

Hi Natto

Before my i30 I had a Nissan Primera 2.0 petrol M/T

When we towed our 1400 kg caravan we got 11,75 L/100 (8,5 km/L).

As the cartrailer have less wind resistance/drag that will give you better economy, but as you have the auto transmission, I will say you should expect around the 8,5 km/L anyway.

I'm predicting closer to 10 or 11 LPH sorry .. I imagine you are probably averaging over 8 LPH already without a trailer and small car behind  :undecided:

hoprfully if I remember,by the end of the first week of October,I'll be able to let you know what the deisel does,I was only going on what my trip computer was telling me,but even at 10 to 12 litres a hundred,I'd still be pretty happy with that, but with the dog's on board . the missus and a handler,I'll be going easier than if I was towing a car trailer.

Here Ya go PPL, after our trip to the Royal, around a 300 Kilometre trip, topped up before we left and filled up on return(next day actually as we arrived home late evening),the results from the cars trip computer was telling us on the way down to Perth, up hill and down dale, it was fluctuating between 6.5 to 11.2 litres per 100 K's  that was sitting  on the speed limits mostly 110 KPH, until we hit the metro area.

On the way home, being dark I took it real easy, no more than 100 KPH, the trip computer never went over 9.1 L/100K, but the proof was in the refill at the end of the trip and the Kilometres we did, it averaged out over the whole trip of 9.4 Ltrs per 100 kilometres, so I was pretty impressed, total trailer weight with everything, dog's and all was smack on 1000kgs.

Now even though I was truely impressed with the towing ability of our little Bruce, the amount of power his little deisel engine had was impressive, once moving,I was a little disappointed he struggled a bit in taking off, when we were on a slight to mild incline, but that was the only problem we came across, towed well, handle surprisingly well and once we were on open roads you never really knew  the trailer was there, other than the hatchback taillights lighting up the front of the trailer and the clearance lights on the guards, showing like orange spotlights in the dark in the mirrors.

To say I was impressed would be an understatement, be nice to be able to get a tow bar on Cyril and do a comparison towing, but as I haven't got a spare $450 laying around that won't be happening for awhile, Cyril on averge driving between the two seems to have more power, but I have had the computer tweeked by a dealer after we had the power issues with him,he is also only a five speed compared to Bruce which is a six speed.

Hi Rick

Glad to hear you're impressed with Bruce..

Think 9.4 is very good when driving at those speeds.. :goodjob2:
Just imagine what it would be if you could keep it at 80-85 km/h  :whistler:

Just shows it's not necessary with a big SUV/Pickup V8 to tow a big trailer or a caravan.

That's a great write up Rick not with a P  :whistler:

I cant get 10's in my Commodore , on a nice freeway WITHOUT a tailer. They are great figures, this is why I drive with a smile in the I30.

Asterix, I get a bit bored at those speeds  :whistler: I know I said on the way home we sat on 100kph but we probbly only averaged 90-95,my eyes in the dark aint what they used to be,even with the spotties, I have a smaller lightweight general trailer, I have no problems about towing this one, it's only rated Aggregate weight of 750 kgs,so any towing now will be done with bruce other than our old commodore wagon.

847563
yes I haven't been able to get tens in our old wagon for ages,we get pretty close if I'm frugal on the throttle, never get rid of the old girl,we had her since new, 23 years so theres a bit of sentiment there, still fun to drive too, mind you it's getting harder to get in and out of,because when I was younger and a bit more wild,I did and had a lot of mods done on her,one being dropping her 4 inches.
