In Oz the i30 chassis IS pre-drilled ready for towbar fitment.

I fitted the towbar yesterday and the wiring harness today. Fitting was really straightforward. The Hyundai instruction sheets are really well set out. The hardest part was lifting the tinsnips to the rear "bumper" and making the cut to allow the hitch part of the towbar to fit. It really helped having the car on ramps and eye-balling the situation carefully first. I had negative thoughts beforehand about botching the cut and ending up with a shocker of a job. It all went well and was a really satisying way to spend a bit of time.

Thanks Hati and Syecadelic for your pointers...

I have a job to do tomorrow that involves moving a trailer. It will be interesting to see how well the diesel pulls a load. I have had thoughts recently of getting a camper trailer and doing some holidaying.

Didn't take any photos...very subtle Shambles...nothing new to add that other photos haven't shown already...however...I hitched up the trailer to the new towbar today and drove over 100km to pick up trimmed foliage that I needed to remove from another residence. Gardener quoted $120 (which I figure comes off the cost of the towbar)...the mighty diesel verily flew along.

I have towed this trailer using my Getz (also 1.6 litre engine) and believe me...you really know the trailer is there with the Getz.

I still think that turbo diesel-powered cars are one of the best kept automotive secrets in Oz. The difference in torque between the i30 and the Getz is obvious under normal conditions...put a trailer on the back of both and it's VERY BLEEDIN' OBVIOUS!!!

A satisfying day. I celebrated by having a sauna and a swim!

I have done a 'towbar' search here and read the threads but have some questions that i30 owners may be able to answer.

I have a genuine Hyundai (hatch) towbar with genuine Hyundai wiring harness lined up to buy for a good price.

Where are you from. What price did you get for tow bar & wiring harness.

I am thinking also having a tow bar fittied to my i30 Diesel wagon

Hey Guys

I have been quoted $860 for a genuine  fitted tow bar.

I personally think that is far too much.

Does anyone know where I can it done for a much cheaper price through a Hyundai Dealer in or around Sydney metro area

Welcome to the forum Stewy76, but Yikes

Tell us about your car, I take it you are concerned about warranty if you're insisting on Hyundai fitting.

My car is a i30 SLX Diesel wagon. Only 9 months old. Yes I'm concern about the warranty if I went elsewhere.

Nice touch with the avatar Stewy (thanks)  :goodjob:

Fitting the Towbar yourself is apparently quite easy and if it voids the warranty would only be on the towbar itself unless you punctured the fuel tank or something which is unlikely ... :winker:

If that's a Hyundai quote I guess it won't vary much between dealers. There are many reputable towbar fitters but of course, it all comes back to the warranty.

Great choice of engine BTW, we have 2  in our family and are happy with them both. :goodjob2:

Towbar & Tow Ball - $425.22 RRP
Trailer wiring harness - $90.52 RRP
(excluding fitment, gst included)

Best time to have got it was when purchasing the car as I got mine for $266.00 installed...  :D

Not to ruin your parade Rusty but I got mine thrown in the purchase price (not fitted of course)  ;) . But yes, definitely best to haggle for a tow bar when you purchase the car.

Hi Stewy & welcome, i'm on my second diesel i30, the first one i got was a sx 08 five speed, got a tow bar fitted at a place in Botany, tow bar & fitted was around $200, it worked well .
i was quoted $650 for genuine they said they had to remove rear bumped. the tow bar i got was fast to fit & easy to remove. about half hour to fit about same to remove. all bolt on no cutting or drilling. if you had warrany worries coulf only effect anything to do with the tow bar causing the dammage. i could not see how it could cause damage. i removed mine put the plastic cover back and would not know it had a tow bar fitted. not putting it on the new one as don't need it.

  • Mmm....Turbo's...
We've got two diesel i30's (1 auto & 1 manual) that were both purchased second hand but with only around 30k on the clocks. My partner has the auto which already had a towbar fitted, she won't be doing any towing so i stole it for my car, it's a genuine Hyundai type but made in Australia.
I fitted this towbar to my car yesterday (haven't done the wiring harness yet) and the hardest part would have to be making sure not to get carried away cutting the section of bumper out, little bit by little bit with a hacksaw blade is the way i did it, my patients payed off in the end because the cut out is only just large enough for the job and looks quite neat.
I didn't have instructions but somebody mentioned earlier about the them stating the original underside plastic covers to be disposed of, i have not put them back on yet but i agree with this person that said with some small modifications they can be refitted which i will be doing, it looks much neater with the plastic covers back on.
I do have a small gripe about the Ozzy made genuine bar is that when it's bolted up it actually pushes against the bumper bar hangers which are there to support the lower section of the bumper bar, meaning it is hard to put the retaining clips back in because the holes don't line up anymore, i haven't actually tried putting the clips back in yet but I'm pretty sure the clips won't be strong enough to hold the force, might have to think up another method  (This is why i generally don't buy Australian made!)
Anyway I'll finish the job and do some towing coz i reckon the diesel will be superb for towing, especially with my Steinbauer Performance Module!

I'll put my hand up  ;)  The covers also stop the mud and crap thrown up by the rear wheels to pack up into the bumper.

I thought my genuine towbar is also aussie made, the instructions certainly implied that. It cleared everything nicely. Maybe mine is a v.2... One things for sure, my clips went back in place without the issues you describe.
