looks more like a case putting the age brackets togethor to suit! break it down to 5 year gaps across the board please
Sorry snowcherry. They aren't my brackets. They are used by the various road transport bodies and seem to be pretty standard. There must be raw data somewhere which lists each fatality by age and then I guess someone uses a spreadsheet to group them however they want.

Very interesting Stats Trevor.. as you say lots of variable come into play..

Even things like the type of cars they drive.. Young folks and their older commodores or early excels for example (older people with better safer cars etc..)

Some more interesting stats here Daz. Although they are 5 years out of date, one would expect the figures will get worse. As they say, the over 60 group is growing rapidly and they are driving more.

Australia’s roads and drivers are both aging.  Australians over 60 years of age represent 17% or nearly 3.5 million of the population, and over the last 10 years have accounted for more than 1 in 5 road crash fatalities.

The senior population is growing at a faster rate than any other age group, and as people age, hearing, vision and reaction time begin to diminish.

As a result of the decline of birth rates in Australia and the increase of life expectancy, the elderly population has grown by 164% over the twenty years to 2002, compared to a total population increase of 29% over the same period.

Of the 1628 people who were killed on our roads in 2003, 324 - or one in five - were 60 years and over.

    *      Currently over 1 in 5 drivers killed in road crashes are seniors
    *      Nearly 1 in 5 passengers killed in road crashes are seniors
    *      Over 1 in 3 pedestrians killed in road crashes are seniors
    *      Over 1 in 5 cyclists killed in road crashes are seniors, and
    *      1 in 20 of motorcyclists killed are seniors.

I am a senior driver and based upon this information I'm going to get myself a nice big shiny motorbike. Far safer than a car or even walking...... :winker:

A few months ago my wife read some statistics which proved that most road accidents occur within 3 miles of your home - so we moved house 10 miles away.

Except, (if you believe the propaganda) you're 38 times more like to be killed or injured on a motorcycle....

oh i knew they weren't your breakdowns, sorry! i was just saying generally, i want them in uniform age gaps to be fair.  i don't think it's right how they did that, seems sneaky to me.

so...nearly 4 out 5 drivers killed in road accidents are not seniors

True. But again, we don't know how many kilometers each group drives in a given period, nor how many drivers each group encompasses, nor the average state of their cars.

your the only other person that i know that has said that...

a lot of 'kids' cant afford a car with a 5 star safety rating... i mean ive only just done it now... and im 25... had you asked me when i was 18 if i cared about a safety rating i would have said "i dont even care about seat belts'

i think that (dazzlers point) contributes to the statistics a lot compared to their older and much better off financially counterparts in the graphs/comparisons...

Not sure they are useless but, as with all figures, you can make them say whatever you want.
I think what's most important though, is trends within each group and in relation to other groups which would indicate where the various messages are getting through and where they aren't.

No to both

In UK people who started driving before the Driving Test was introduced didn't need to take the test.  They received it by default.

i.e.
Compulsory testing brought in for all drivers who started driving on or after 1 April 1934

Test suspended during 2 WW

 Feb 1947
A period of a year granted for wartime provisional licences to be converted into full licence without passing the test.

You'll do spot.
However, tread carefully here. Unless you're pretty old yourself, you might find yourself outnumbered on here.
Have you taken the Reactions Test yet?
