Oh, so why would they need to upgrade the ecu? That doesn't sound standard to me...unlesss you mean you upgraded it and therefore had the tune redone.

Hi Mutley... It is a bit like a firmware upgrade on a PVR or a bios upgrade on a PC motherboard...(or even a soft ware upgrade on the i30 Audio System)

From time to time due to a process of "continual improvement" Hyundai and other Auto manufacturers would tweak their ECU programming to possibly further improve fuel economy, cold weather starting or any number of other "issues"

Sorry for the off topic (even if it is my topic )

That is very interesting and news to me. I am not unfamiliar with modding and tweaking but have never heard of manufacturer's doing it.

What your saying is true Dazz, but doubt they spend that much time on the i30 upgades as its just a budget car, to reprogram takes a lot of time, time costs money. if there was a big problem, maybe they would, but doubt it m8 they are pretty good as they are now. only program work i could see them doing is to meet future imission laws but that is a step back in performance in most cases. i have watched a guy program an ecu with fly by wire throtle and its a very slow time consuming prosess mate its not plug & play. takes time and no garantee you will improve things.

Hi John.. That is the only explanation I could come up with for Steve being told his ecu was being reset to new setting at his next service (can you think of another reason? - his is a petrol model)

Dazz some Dealer service teams know when there is a new update and they would have an idea if your car has the latest or not. but can be very complicated learning exactly what the update actually does.
i had and still have my 2004 BA V8 ute it has fly by wire throtle like the i30 have & it can have updates installed if i choose. i once had an update that i think had updated throtle control software it made the ute feel faster as its not your foot that controls the throtle its the ECU. so if they say they have an update, they have probably tried it on other cars the same and noticed the difference. who knows.
just a side note, my ute has not had any software updates in about three years has 220,000k and runs nice. i change oil at 5,000k change filter too have used unfashionable turbo diesel mineral base oil 15W 40W from new not one problem no oil leaks no smoke no oil useage. auto trans is only problem i have had but i also only use BP or Caltex 98 fuel burns very clean.
cheers

About greedy dealers, the GMH dealers want $50 for a headlight globe, H7, and I can get one through REPCO for $17 retail and $11 trade price and they wonder why you wont go there

Yeah, I think they are mostly all the same..My Daughter and her fiance had a water pump s**t itself near a GMH dealer (fortunately) when they were driving a Commodore wagon accross the Nullabor and they got slugged close to A$600 including labour to replace it (at the same time there were water pumps - supply only) in an Autobarn or Supercheap catalogue to suit their car for about A$125 I think from memory.. the dealers had them over a barrell

Linlake have seen genuine Hyundai fuel filters from $85 to $120 depending on were you go $150 seems excessive, maybe it's a large spare parts warehouse they keep them in an the parts guy spends half hour to find one so they add labour cost?
how many k's has your motor done? & how many k's since fuel filter was replaced? i have always had Betseys fuel filter changed at 30,000 as my tech said if injectors get warn or damaged they cost a lot more. have you got excessive water build up?

They can't say that. It is a restraint of trade.

All they can say is that if the filter you bought is not up to standard and causes damage then it is not covered. Where as if the Hyundai one does damage it is.

Though if the cheap one causes damage, you have other avenues of remedy.

This is one of the reasons I don't use dealers for service. That and my 30k service was quoted by Hyundai as $600 and I did it (using better mobil 1 0w40 oil) for under $250......

  • He loves nature in spite of what it did to him..
I was told an interesting story from the windscreen replacement guy who replaced the windscreen on my Forester before i sold it, only 2 weeks ago,  he charges $250 cash to supply and install windscreens for most cars, and he also does work for the large local Hyundai/Honda/Mazda/Subaru/Suzuki dealer.      he quoted a woman $300 cash to replace the rear window on a near new Mazda 3,   she told it sounded to cheap, and decided to go to Mazda to get it replaced, as she "trusted" Mazda to supply the right windscreen and do it properly, Mazda quoted $800 to do the Job,  sure enough, the same windscreen fitter was called up by the dealer, and replaced the same womans rear window, only difference is she just handed $500 to the dealer for absolutly nothing...

An interesting fact I learnt when researching my Ryco Diesel filter is that filters actually filter better when they have some dirt in them, the filtered out dirt actually assists in filtering the fluid as it passes through. The best point of filtration is just before the whole thing clogs. Obviously you want to avoid that, but made me think about filter change intervals.

  • Sorry, but my karma just ran over your dogma.
I have to agree with beerman re the rip off prices charged by Hyundai dealers. Surely Hyundai should get these idiots to realise that the motoring public hates being ripped off.

Here's a link to my last service costs. I will not use dealers.

Thats true to a point beerman, but i've seen dirt come out of some filters after you remove them. also a filter is a restriction of flow so if it filters better dirty it just means it is more restrictive. but the thing i worry about is water in filter as the motor stop if they get too much water build up. these new common rail normaly have a warning light come on. when that happens you have to change. a diesl van at work thats common rail had that light come on, we had the filter changed then 10,000k latter came on i think we got some bad fuel with water in it, that happens. with the older diesel trucks had to pump the water out the filter or they stopped was a pain but, if all you have to do is change fuel filter when you get water in fuel, you count yourself lucky as in most cases it will hydralic the motor as water does not compress. i've seen a lot of hydraliced motors with nitro burners they do it a lot bad news.
