Sunroof shock for Victorian family - Yahoo!7

Saw this on the news. Hyundai have provided a replacement car pending an investigation.

But in one of the most "balanced" examples of reporting I've seen in ages, the TV crew also spoke to a specialist sun roof installer/ repairer who said he's never seen it happen unless the roof was hit by something.

Later today, Hyundai said they were looking into it and there was some light being shed on the problem!  :whistler:

But seriously, they were probably lucky it was a discontinued model that was involved.

People will more likely associate this, one of, with the i45 which is no longer sold new than some of the other models with sunroofs, like the GD i30 Premium.

They do hype it up a bit though (glass in the little girls hair) as that type of shatter doesn't make for sharp shards of glass...

Not saying I would have liked it to happen to us.. Not good PR about the the loan car either.. :fum:

Hmmm

So Hyundai say it's a quote "one off situation", yet it has been a known recall on the Veloster and there is more and more evidence of the ix35 with panoramic sunroof in the 2010/11 MY being in at UK dealers with owners querying the cracking noises they are hearing from the sunroof area when driving.  My friends ix35 is currently at the dealer for the 5th time having this "investigated" despite it being "fixed" the previous 4 times!

Hi Brian,  is that the same ix35 that has had instrument and other issues? :undecided:

Yup.

To be fair the clutch and instrument replacements were recalls and were dealt with by Hyundai efficiently, the problems with those were at the dealers end where they failed to ensure that the slave cylinder was properly connected and the fluid got sprayed all over the engine compartment.  They then ordered a 4WD instrument panel and fitted it to a 2WD vehicle and wondered why they couldn't find the 4WD switch to turn off the instrument panel light.

The sunroof issue has been the one that has caused yet more catastrophe from the dealer, including damaging the headliner with a burn or melt and grease all over the white headliner also.  They tried to blame my non-smoking friend for the burn claiming it was a cigarette burn.  They then tried to clean the headliner but spotted the leather seats front and rear with spray droplets, they failed to see this and so had to get it back in to sort the leather out, meanwhile a Hyundai specialist was called up to look into the ongoing sunroof issues and pointed out that the melt mark was not a cigarette burn and that the dealer had to fix that when the car was next in for the sunroof to be looked at again.

They have also failed spectacularly to actually tell the owner what the faults found and fixed with the roof have been.

Sounds a lot like body flexing. Glass is not flexible so shattering is precisely what glass will do if stressed too much. The panoramic roof is heavy and I'm sure the standard metal roof will have bracing applied across it. This bracing is not possible in the panoramic option, buyer, beware. Good idea, but doesn't work.:(

I have never owned or wanted to own a car with a sunroof and I don't think I would buy one with a glass roof.

Hence the reason,I would never have a glass sunroof,I seen an accident on one of our highways, bloke was speared through the leg when his roof failed(which was to be expected) when he rolled his I30 with a glass roof,no safety features in the world are going to save you from a tree branch coming through a now open roof.

I for the life of me can't see how a glass area in a car that size could be considered safe, metal flexes expands and contracts at far different rates than glass, anything can set these explosions off,can you tell I'm no fan of glass roof's

The guy I work with had this happen late last year.
Driving at @ 100 km/h on the freeway and the sunroof exploded in his near new Mazda 3.
Mazda didn't want to know and refused to replace it under warranty, telling him to claim on his insurance.
They claimed it had been struck from above by something but looking at it, it was apparent that it exploded outwards, not imploded inwards.
He wasn't travelling under a bridge at the time or anything like that, but at the end of the day Mazda wouldn't come to the party.   :fum:

And given the right circumstances, a metal roof won't stop the car from being impaled either, or the occupants for that matter.

I understand the feeling. The first few months I had my GD Premium I felt quite wary about the creaking noises. But they have since happened at fewer intervals.

I would imagine that during extremes of hot weather/cold weather/cycling temps, the glass would be significantly more prone to breaking if the body received the right type of flex across the chassis & body.

At the end of the day though, that's what warranty & insurance is there for.

I wouldn't want that glass roof either, for security reasons.

Another thing; Doesn't it get really hot in a car with all glass roof, especially in a country where it's that warm (OZ)..

I guess it would demand a more powerfull aircon as well to keep the car cool...

I like the feel of a car with a full "moon roof" like the i45 Premium, but would be a little more cautious of buying one after hearing of this and other similar incidents.

I reckon being darkly tinted the glass could get really hot and fracture like some outdoor glass tables do.

They do have a interior blind I think to keep the heat out if necessary.

..and the Hyundai Premiums (various models) look awesome with the dark glass roof (particularly in white and silver)  :goodjob2: :goodjob:

I had a sunroof in my last i30 and where it came into it's own, was when the car was parked in hot weather.
Just crack the 'roof open a little bit and most of the hot air escapes.

That's what I love about the sunroof the most. I mostly park outside, so the car is always hot of an afternoon. Thankfully there is always a cool breeze, so I wind all the windows down, and crack the roof open. By the time I've left the front hate at work, the temp has dropped considerably.

I find blasting the air on at my feet on high for a minute or so also helps expel hot air. But that could also be the whole correlation is not causation thing.
