I assume that the tunnel, which is situated in the middle of the rear floor is for the exhaust system?

It's a pity that the floor cannot be flat, and the exhaust pipes some how re routed.

I agree it would be great to have a flat rear floor but next time you are getting into your car take a quick look underneath to settle your curiosity.

The tunnel adds a large amount of strength to the floor pan.

Sorry for the late reply.  New member catching up on earlier threads.

the tunnel in the floor provides strength, and adds to the rigidity of the vehicle.   a flat floor will flex and bend far more easily than one with a curve in it.

Also, if you have a fragile bag that might slide around in the boot, the floor of one of the rear seats is a nice size to contain the item without it getting hurt.   :goodjob:

The hatch has bag handles (one either side of the hatch space).  :whistler:

I agree with what others have said, it is more about strengthening the floor pan by putting a "tunnel" in it, than a place to route the exhaust pipe.  Try it with a bit of paper (i.e. make it look like the floor plan with a tunnel, then try and bend it).

Corrugated cardboard and roofing work using the same principle.

Wow, I totally had not noticed those there before!  Nice little feature.
