Just a point of discussion....

I was driving to work in my Hybrid today (but this relates to the i30 in the same way) and I was calculating how much I save in a year by driving carefully.. By my calculations not that much!

I think the difference in economy between driving normally, compared with driving carefully in my Hybrid (or say a 1.6 CRDi i30) is only about .5 LPH.

This equates to 5 litres per 1000 KMs or 100 litres for 20,000kms (12 months driving for me at the moment) That equates to about A$140 P.A. at current fuel prices or less than $3 per week

Not saying I will (or could) stop being an economical driver but an interesting exercise all the same...

I think it would probably be a bigger difference the less economical your car was..

$3 per week though could be (almost) a very pleasurable cappuccino in your favourite cafe with your considerable other, so doesn't that make it completely worthwhile?

It's all relative isn't it Dazz, I mean, if you were starving that $3 would be an absolute life saver.   As it is we live in relative luxury and feel that we then have the right to waste and squander...  not a dig at you Dazz, just a statement about us all.

So, save the $3 a week and donate it to a usefull cause...    I'll forward my bank details in a private message

Interesting comments  :winker: Like I hinted at .. I doubt I could not drive economically if I tried too...

I got into the habit of coasting as much as I could in the CRDi and seem to do it even more in the Hybrid..

I might save up that $3 per week and buy us a treat

Whilst you have started a thread on fuel economy I would submit the above.  I have been inspired to keep an eye on the money situation (being a pensioner).  You'll notice the the middle one i.e. ruond town, the economy takes a nose dive....   :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared:

By chance last week I took the bus into town.

Cost each way was £2.70 = £5.40 return

Cost by car for fuel only would be £1.10 approx.

Ok I would have to pay for parking £1.00 short stay  = £2.20 but as I park some 5 minutes away from the car park back to £1.10.

As I've already paid for the annual costs I would be £4.30 out of pocket.

£4.30 plus 20p will buy me 2 pints of beer when I make my weekly trip to the local.

  • 1.4 Petrol Active I'm no expert, so please correct me if

Yeah, there are all ways to view this.  I have a FREE bus pass and it never even occurs to me to use it.   I just instinctivly get the car out, I don't wanna be sat next to a smelly persopn on a bus (no offence to eye30  )....

I could save a small fortune if I used my FREE bus pass, well, at lkeast $3 a week anyhow  :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

your only looking at one area Dazz, driving for economy also cust down on wear & tear like your auto trans, or if manual your gear box drive train clutch, your tyre wear all add's up.  the fuel is the cheap part. what range are you getting from a full tank with the Hybrid?& how many liters to fill the tank? hey i was thinking they would be even cheaper on LPG as it's only 0.60cents per Litre if you could pump natural gas in even cheaper. much cleaner burning too.

It's a 65 litre tank but I never get more than about 55 litres into it (getting around 900 kms to the tank) ..

Pretty happy with that (good point about other factors) That is why I started this thread...

I lift off the throttle as soon as I hit the speed limit .. but she doesn't like the cold much (Bit like the CRDi)

All very well to drive for economy but all that goes out the window when I hit a long steep hill with a passing lane, I just gotta "blow" past everyone else in their "lesser" cars.... :whistler:
