I have just bought a new 2010 i30 and have found that the outside of the car are deceiving especially when driving and one is trying to see any on coming traffic and the traffic looks so far away and yet if you view your rear view mirror the oncoming traffic can be right behind you - this to me can be a serious problem.  I love the car she is great to drive and the sound system is fantastic.  Happy i30

Even after over 18 months of using them I still hate the convex* mirrors fitted to my i30.
I personally think they are dangerous......

Unfortunately they seem to be fitted to most cars these days.

I thought they must have become a legal requirement but someone on here has replaced them with flat glass and has assured us it's OK to do so.

The concave mirrors cut out the wast majority of the blind spots from your side vision. In ideal circumstances (i.e. seat position and mirror angle) not even a motorbike fits in the blind spot left.


I think it is about time they make it compulsory on all cars since a lot of drivers (most I see on the roads) do not turn their heads when changing lines for example.

I bought a new over mirror for the inside so it matched the outside mirrors as I was finding the view from the inside and then looking in the outside mirror was deceiving.

Since I've bought I've no problem in judging distance etc..

Thanks guys for your comments about the outside mirrors, sounds like some of you dont care about safety, I consider this to be a safety issue and that Hyundai should be made to fix the problem,  Won't be funny if someone pulls out to overtake and there is a semi who appears to be some distance away and in fact he is right on your tail..  Hell what a mess

It is not that we don't care about safety 

As the majority of cars now have this feature which has pros (reduced blind spot) and cons  (illusion cars are further away than they are) I guess most of us are resigned to the fact that we need to get used to it...

I, for example have had it in the last few cars owned and I don't even notice it any more.. that is not to say I don't subconsciously make adjustment in my head for distance and always double check anyway in the rear view mirror and with a head check..

A simple way to get used to the distances is to check at a set of lights how big cars appear and turn head to ascertain actual distance. In the current driving environment on Australian roads is actually safer to  have concave mirrors because of the reduced blind spots. Just a matter of getting used to it, really.

I care about safety which is why I hate convex mirrors.
While I concede that they help remove blind spots, I fail to see how making objects appear further away is safe.
Maybe this is one of the reasons so many drivers cut others off when changing lanes etc?
That and the lack of doing a head check.....

The rear view from any mirror requires learning because it's simply not the same as looking directly... even direct viewing has required learning. Babies really can't understand what they see!

The extra angle of view is a positive safety factor! All you have to do is translate the distance (and as noted, the internal mirror offers a reference point). Crikey, what's wrong with that? Takes about a week to work it out.

I still have a blind spot which is most notable when joining motorways and there are vehicles in the outer lanes.

I found it hard to adapt but now is fine. Nothing a head check wont fix.

Plus I found thus nifty little thing factory fitted fir this issue, there's a toggle switch on the door that actually allows you to adjust your mirrors to various angles.... Moderne technology helping me see again

Plus if you adjust them correctly the objects closer to the car are seem more accurately for depth perception. The outer ones are then affected. So that would be the car 2 lanes over not right next to you

That's probably because I am not in the same part of Townsville as you.. Plus I don't get out much anyway..

Please don't take this the wrong way when i say I have been driving a long time (as have others who have already commented above)
There are two several points here.

To begin with, the left hand mirror has had this feature now for years in Australia, so unless you are jumping from a 20 year old car into an i30, you should have some experience with the concave mirror phenomenon.

I drive a lot of customers' cars and have been experiencing the drivers side concave for some time so I didn't come into it cold.
However I still have some issues with this.

I have to say I never had a problem with blind spots (except in Falcons up to the AUII) in any car, provided I take the time to adjust the mirrors properly before I drive off.

So I really don't see the need for them.

That's a long winded way of saying I'm with rustynuts on this.

OK, my turn.
I found it difficult when I first jumped in and started using the driver's mirror, but as previously pointed out, the left hand mirrors have been this way for years.
I think it is a matter of personal preference - the old type were easier to judge distances with, but gave a narrower field of vision.
I am now used to it and can judge distances with the mirror as no doubt most can after becoming familiar with it.  And I always check physically too before changing lanes etc.
My personal preference would be a normal mirror, but I have got used to it.
And my face looks really quite thin in it too.

Cos' there are plenty of nutters behind too, Eye......
Keeping an "eye" on them might just save yourself from serious injury as around 30 odd percent (I think) of accidents are rear end shunts.
