Due to the fluid coupling in autos, they are not as efficient at sending power to the ground. They are even less efficient during gear changes. This can add up to 2-3 l/100k compared to a manual. With 10 speeds constantly changing, how is this a good idea. BTW I have 2 i30 autos & they're both great!

Haha probably I guess when it brakes down (at I don't know, let's say 300k km), you definitely won't be fixing it.

Well, VW's 7-speed DSG works quite well. Changes gears quickly (you can get the same or mostly even quicker acceleration 0-100 km/h with automatic DSG) and the fuel consumption is about the same..

Sorry not entirely correct...  The newer 6 speed Auto boxes (in cars like the i45) are actually slightly more economical than the 6 speed manual

Much the same as more gears in a manual... The 4 speed autos in your i30's cost you much more fuel than the manuals because they are either labouring or revving more than they should due to a lack of ratios  ... That is how I see it anyway (and I guess computer control of these things is also getting better and more efficient)

Dearer models like Nissan 370Z have dual clutches too...

the more gears in an automatic transmission you have allows the engine to rev out a lot lower between gear changes allowing the engine to use fuel at a lot lower rate.  if the 4 speed trans changes at say 2600rpm a 10 speed auto could allow the trans to change gears at a much lower 1800rpm. IMO. much lower rev's at gear up shift will dramatically reduce the fuel consummation. in theory.

Don't know exactly how it is in long term, but I drove DSG few times in Golf GTI (DSG 6-speed) and it was great. Shifts really quickly and smoothly. Don't know about DSG 7-speed much though. I just know that it can't handle too much torque (I think max is 250Nm), so a lot of owners, that bought Golf 1.4 TSI with 122hp (7-speed DSG) and wanted to chip-tune it to more, were really disappointed. The powerful ones still have 6-speed DSG.

From my basic reading, aren't there still reliability questions over the DSG? Also very costly to fix......

Compared to Hyundai, I think everything in a VW will be costly to fix!

Why don't they make a CVT like Audi's Tiptronic? If I'm ever going for auto, it's going to be definately a CVT type.
It behaves like having thousands of gears
