I AM depressed...
I have just been told that for work next year I will need to relocate to another branch of my "company"...which is about 10 metres from the local beach....and about 300 metres away from the Pacific Ocean. It is indeed a great location to work in...don't get me wrong...no complaints about that.

It's the fact that my i30 will be sitting in the salt air every weekday now for 6 hours at a time....and I can't bring myself to do this to my first ever new car.

I have lived in a similar environmental situation to this before and am aware of just how harsh an environment it is for anything made of metal. Indeed, computers and laminating machines etc. from the salty environment look like sh#t after a year or so.

Begrudgingly, I am looking at getting a sacrificial (second) work car....another Hyundai.

Do any members have a recommendation for another Hyundai model? I have been looking at Getz, Elantra and Excel. I would be travelling about 25 km each way on roads that vary from 50 to 90 kph. My budget is around $7-8K.

My choice is Hyundai Getz, that proved to be very relyable even in the harsh Russian environment (salt litters our roads every winter).

the excel would be a very cheap car,the getz could be a bit of a dear second car just to sacrifice to the sea air.  i haven't seen an excel that has rust in it to be honest.  on that rust point, i haven't seen any of the earlier Hyundai's with rust.

For cheapness and given the small amount of kms to travel, I'd go with the Excel too, unless you could perhaps pick up a Getz cheap enough at the govt auctions or similar.
An Excel would be well, well under your budget.

Good point. And it doesn't matter if it gets a car park dent. 
In Perth there are still so many around left over from the storm in May (I think?) 2010 that obviously weren't insured & they look like golf balls.
In fact, I saw a VW Golf in Nedlands one day and it truly looked like a golf ball - it was totally covered in dimples, every panel

Paolo, I doubt your car will suffer because of the salt air. I live on the Sunshine Coast and haven't seen any rust affected Hyundais of any model around here.

PS. The Central Coast is a beautiful part of Australia.

I'd get a cheap getz.. Try and a 1.6 Model (we had a 2006 1.6 model for about 12 months) they are fun to drive

I put a deposit on a 1.6 litre Getz today....2006 model with 5 doors and 59,000km on the clock. It looks and drives like new...nice and tight suspension etc. I will pick it up on Friday and it will cost me the princely sum of $6400.

Bargain.. My daughter had a 1.4 ex-rental 2007? model getz for a while and it wasn't as economical or as zippy as our 1.6,  2006 model... What colour is it? Ours was Sky Blue Metallic which seems to be the most popular colour. When we were in Queensland recently I was still checking rego plates to see if any sky blue ones were are old one

The owners are a couple in their 70's who bought it new. I looked at  the service book (which is up to date) and it all looks legit. I think that it was a great score. I will let you know how it works out.

Just two comparisons with my i30 diesel:-
1) Getz gearbox is way-less notchy than my 34,000 km diesel and
2) It felt like I threw out a boat anchor in the Getz when I turned on the air conditioner....I LOVE the torque of my diesel!

Well that's how it is when you get used to it (the diesel torque).

After driving diesels for some time, it always felt "funny" when driving petrol. In the beginning, I remember always checking the handbrake. And even if the petrol engine actually goes better (for example), it doesn't seem like that. In petrol, you just see the speed increasing, but can't feel the "kick".

And don't forget.. It's not a diesel, so you need to rev it up (take it to and above 4,000 rpm) to make it go quicker. Because 1.6 petrol engine in Getz goes really well!! In Slovenia there are only few of them with that powerful engine. Most of them are 1.1 or 1.4 !

accim, there are always people who try to do this and some get away with it but in Australia we require the kilometers to be lodged as part of the ownership transfer process. Any serious discrepancies are pretty obvious.

I know, I know. I was just commenting, because I was reading this thread on Slovenian forum (the thread is called with a "bad word" and describes a lot of companies that sell the vehicles here). The thing is, that they import vehicles from let's say Germany or Italy with many kilometers (let's say 200.000, 300.000 km on the clock), do few cosmetic corrections to the vehicles, so it looks good inside and out, "set" the kilometers to 90.000 km or 120.000 km and sell it for twice the price, they are actually worth..

I reckon you will find it is still a bit tight if driven by elderly folk... Drive it a bit spirited for a few weeks and you might be surprised how differently it performs

A short update on my "new" Getz....
I have owned the little bugger for exactly a fortnight (today).

I am pretty much impressed with how much car I was able to get for a relatively small outlay. I have travelled nearly 1000km in it. After 615 km on the first tank refill I needed to put in 42 litres of fuel...not too bad at all.

When comparing the Getz to my i30 diesel I feel that every component of the i30 is superior... from the quality of the plastic inside the cabin to the way that the doors 'thunk' closed...more robust, more quiet, way-more grunt (both 1.6 litre engines) etc. etc. 

Yet my partner doesn't like my i30 much but she loves the Getz...

I don't understand this at all. She did let slip that (to her) the i30 is like a tractor. I repeat...I don't get this at all. She owns an older Mazda MX5 which would have to be the most impractical car that I have ever driven/worked-on.

I guess that the Getz has made me appreciate the i30 even more than before for all of its creature comforts, performance and economy. I also appreciate what a severely-practical car the Getz is...not a frill to be seen or felt anywhere, yet it getz the job done admirably and is fun to drive.

Who would have thought that only several years ago (through ignorance) I used to bag Korean cars. Now I have 2 of them and love them both for entirely different reasons.

Thanks for that Paolo.. Trish wasn't a huge fan of the CRDi except for the cruising performance on the highway .. She loved zipping around in our 2006 Getz (we only traded it because she needed more room) She loves her MY11 Petrol CW even more...

Ironically I only thought of you and your getz today.. There was a Yellow one just like yours in the front row of a Burnie caryard with $8500 on the window .. I was driving past so didn't get a chance to see what year or mileage etc (But it was the 2006-2011 model)

Just something to note about living or working near the Ocean, don't be concerned about the body for rust its the under body components that are will be effected more.  Keep an eye on control arms, brake components (Calipers included- Alloy) suspension bolts etc.  All these components are only secondary area's for paint coverage and I've seen a few vehicles of all brands not have body rust but the underbody components are trashed.  Brookvale and the northern beaches are great places to live but hard on these components.  Salt air does effect modern cars too

when i bought my i30 home, i clay bar treated it, then gave it a paint sealant treatment and wax it regularly.   even now, salt spray just hoses off easily.

Agreed. I bought a second hand 2003 Impreza which had lived it's life since new out in the street from a block of Dee Why units. I bought it in 2006 and when I traded it 2 years ago it was still immaculate. I'm counting on the same sort of performance from my i30 as it spends a good part of its life waiting patiently for me in the car park at Moffat Beach.

Hi Paolo5, sounds like a great buy, i know people that do less k's than that over that many years.
But we DO have people here in Australia that DO play with the the distance car has travelled. was one company in Pennant Hill's selling Prestege Euro Cars and turning the clock back. was on one of the currant affairs shows not long back.
about rust, i meet a guy 10 years back that lived on a beach near Coffs Harbour he had something?? was a small box mounted to a Harley he owned was mounted out of sight. but he showed me, said it stopps rust he had a work 4WD toyota a few cars & a boat & everything he owned had one of these small boxs mounted on them said he has never had a rust problem since useing these things? i think they atract corrosion to stop the rest of the metal structure corroding. i don't know what they are called but i'm sure google would find one.
