hi guys i've been looking all over the internet for a solution to my problem but can't find one. I got my i30 1.6 a week ago and when i tune into a local radio station all i get is the frequency of the station and not the name. I've checked the user manual and the internet but there's nothing about getting the station name. I have tried the "info" button on the dash but that does nothing on the radio. Am i the only one or is this one of the limitations of the i30 radio??

Thanks,
Shamir

Hi Shamir :welcome:

I'm sure we've had members from SA saying your country doesn't broadcast RDS-EON, which is required for the station name to be picked up and displayed  :undecided:

Here in Melbourne, the radio station broadcasts it's name in some signal format.  However, it doesn't show on my i30's radio.  My Jackaroo's radio, on the other hand, shows the radio station's name that you are listening to (on FM only, from memory) eg. TRIPLE M, GOLD1043, etc.  I got that radio from Super Cheap Auto for about $69.  So it could be the i30's radio, in Australia at least, doesn't show the station name.

You need a digital radio for that.

DAB = Digital Audio Broadcasting.

Only in testing stage in Oz in some of the capital cities.

Someone above quoted the standard which displays an analog radio station's ID. It's a sub-signal that is sent out on the FM band. And you need a radio (analog) that will pick it up.

Pity that the i30, having a supposedly "state of the art" entertainment unit, doesn't do this.

Speaking of radio stations, where's the best place to find a list, by region, preferably, of the available stations. I'm picking up a couple which seem to be duplicated and would like to know which is the best one to keep in the presets.

I haven't got digital radio in the Jackaroo, and it gives the FM station name.  This has been around since the mid-nineties, I had a mate with a Holden Calibra which did this (that was in '96), although it only did it for a few stations then (TRIPLE J was one).

I find 91.5 a pretty decent station (if you're into classic rock) and although it's Melbourne based they obviously have a pretty good transmitter as i have no trouble picking it up out here in the sticks.
Here's a link to listen to it online: http://www.classicrockfm.com.au/915  :goodjob:

Ok i think there's a misunderstanding. Every single car i have been in has the radio station name displayed on the radio screen. The i30 has the first radio that i've seen that doesn't show the name of the station. If i had to park two cars next to eachother, the one radio would have the station name while my i30 wouldn't. Is there anyone in SA with this same problem?

Australia has always marketed it's stations by frequency. It's an old custom that stems from tuning the station manually. Stations were arranged from low (Left) to high (Right). With today's PLL tuning and presets, this is no longer a popular method with youngsters, so now we get LIFE FM ,JJJ, MMM which could be any frequency. I prefer the old method myself.

Is that with you setting it up that way or is that just the way it worked for you?

Where your station name is i just have the frequency and the same is at the bottom where all your presets are

When I'm scanning stations I see all these different frequencies which it locks into. But I don't know most of them. However, I am familiar with names, such as Triple M, Fox FM, Gold 104 and so on.

If the stations are broadcasting this info then it'd be great if this radio could pick this info up and to display it. But it ain't a deal breaker by any means. It's one of those "nice to have" things.

I have to print out a list of the FM stations here in Vic and program them in soon, in any case.

Slightly off topic, but the AM radio station used to have to broadcast their call signs at least once every 15 minutes (e.g. 2WS, 3AW, 4BH, 5AM, 6PM, I think I got most states, except Tas, sorry Daz).  The reasoning was so that aircraft could navigate by them while in cloud.  The aircraft can tune in the frequency of the AM station and the ADF (Auto Direction Finder) would point to the radio station tower, relative to the aircraft.  The reason for broadcasting the call sign was so the crew could positively identify the station.  You could then get a cross fix, or passage over the station (when the needle swings around quickly).  They knew the exact location of each tower, and therefore, were able to fix their position in the air.

Back on topic.  If somebody figures out how to get the Aussie i30 radios operating like Alan's, please let us all know!!

Maybe it's just the crappy AM radio causing the "ringing" or whatever it is you hear?
Change to FM and your "tinnitus" may disappear......:p
