The Optima won ecocar car of the year but I still haven't seen even one in the flesh or on the road..

I must investigate but pretty sure we don't get the diesel version here...

It would be on our short list for our next car (subject to a test drive ect... - if we did get the diesel)

I read somewhere though, that projected resale values are dismal so it would need to be a demo model to offset this.

Kia is getting the Hyundai treatment. I think resale will pick up in much the way Hyundai's did.
