I went to open the driver's door from the inside yesterday as I've done thousands of times before and felt something rather sharp.
The "chrome look" coating has started to lift and it sliced the end of my finger open - blood everywhere, wasn't happy  :'(
Has anyone else had this happen?
I'm opening the door very carefully now. I wonder if that would be a warranty fix to replace it (the handle that is, not my finger)?

I would most certainly try for a warranty fix - parts should not become a positive danger in normal use.

A friends Vauxhall/Opel Corsa (2009) model, had the same issue with round the top of hear gear stick, a chrome trim became rough and the coating peeling off, her wee newphew(bout 2/3years old) nearly caught himself on it, Vauxhall covered it under warranty, as it's a known fault. Can't say ive heard of it on a Hyundai though. Possibly a reason they newer i30 models come with black plastic handles on the inside ?

I'd put in for a Warranty claim, i'd like to think they would honour it!

It doesn't matter so much if your passenger slices their finger open, but when it's you personally, that's a different matter - it becomes serious

I wonder does your climate affect the wear on it Dazz? The prolonged heat inside the car?

Possible Sye in Dave's case as Perth gets mid to high 30's Celsius fairly regularly. However, where I live is one of the the cooler parts of OZ with our warmer summer days only hitting 25c on most occasions..

Actually, I'd be happy with a new i40 as compensation as that might help me to try to forget the trauma. Possibly.  :)

A quick update.
I called into my friendly local Hyundai service dept today and started to tell him about the door handle and he finished off the story for me.
Common problem apparently.
He's ordered a new one which will be here in a few days and fitted under warranty.
He said they've done heaps of them.  :)
I think when I showed him which finger it was as I left he probably thought it was a bit rude after he'd been very helpful, but I'm sure he'll understand when he stops and thinks about it

i wonder why the chrome plating cut you... its literally like 200 microns thick! one would think it would break before damaging skin!

Had the same problem with both front door handles and auto trans gear selector.

They can give you a nasty cut!

Live In Qld Aus and it gets hot here. Suspect the heat is degrading the glue used to stick the "fake chrome" to the plastic handles.
Replaced under warranty by dealer without hassle.
