Yesterday I contacted my insurance company to advise them of the modifications I have added to Lubricious since I brought her. I have had a lot of the items for well over a year but had been a bit tardy in advising them.

To my surprise, my premium was not increased and I was advised I can add another $1100 before an increase in my premium.

Probably slightly off topic, but my brother got into a discussion with a leading Bike insurer who told him that they won't insure anything with non standard brakes or steering parts and only any 3 things off their list of 'approved' extra's - fit a fourth and you're gone - even if it is heated handlebars or a safety feature ...

Dazz none of UM options i can see are illegal, but your pipe is a performance mod big difference.
if UM said like a chip tuning box they would change there tune fast. only thing i would not allow if i was UM's insurance is the gas bonnet struts that lift her bonnet. as i've be thinking this bonnet not designed for that & maybe it could send the  bonnet up exposing her runing gear, with out warning.  i'm not complaining just suggesting possibility's. LOL cheers
good for you UM i've got a questionable insurance co same one as Dazz got his pipes knocked back by. long story why i have them but my car is as it came from showroom plus 18k's of travel. not one add on

I am also insured with Allianz on the advice of a mate who is an independent motor insurance assessor.

I asked about changing the wheels to 16" from 15" so that I could fit Bridgestone Potenza Adrenalin tyres and they said only if I fitted genuine alloys from a Hyundai dealer. If I spent $120 at Bridgestone Select for a 16" alloy and not $300 for the Hy genuine then they would not insure me.

Go figure, when I was putting on a better tyre on a rim size standard on the next trim level up.

I can understand them being tight to keep their premiums competetive (which they appear to be) but there needs to be some discretion used (i know that word well - I had to write a 1000 word essay on it when I was at High School  )

Allianz is not cheap up here.
They're more than $100 out of the ball park the last time I checked.

Incidentally just renewed with RACQ.
The two cars together cost only $20 more than last year.

Oh. And the i30 (2 years old) is still waaaaayyyy cheaper than the 2005 Corolla.

The question of declaring modifications is a constant topic amongst caravanners in the U.K. whether adding a towbar does constitute a mod. Some insurers accept it whilst  others want it declared
Some online  insurance proposal forms have a question "is the car modified".  If "no" is clicked it goes on to the next question.  If "yes" is clicked then a drop down list of mods is shown.  Some of the items are bizarre.... motor sport decals.... adhesive windscreen sunstrips....... but towbars and wheels are also included.


If the factory didn't  fit it then  it must be a modification and needs to be declared.  And don't believe all factory options are fitted at the factory.  There is a very large business of  contractors fitting enhancement items  to suit a particular country's market at the port of entry
