After reading the owner's manual and taking note of the safety precautions, what experiences good or bad, have other members had with airbag deployment

. I've not had any deployment event in any vehicle so any input would be appreciated.

Me neither, 84. I don't think anything you are told would prepare you for air bag deployment.

One of my relations was in an accident where the front air bags deployed.

He doesn't remember much about it because it happened so fast - but he was left with a bruise on his face and sore cheeks. Better than than broken ribs or worse.

A woman who was a friend of my mother's had the airbag in her Elantra deploy when someone ran a red light on her. She didn't think it was a big deal and when I saw her about a month later she'd just taken delivery of her replacement (an i30

).
Ironically it was in the period when I was assessing what to replace my Impreza with and had just about decided on the i30 but at that stage hadn't had a good look at one.
So her crash had a bearing on my choice.

Trish is only 5 feet tall and probably sits no more than 8 or 10 inches from the steering wheel (I worry about what injuries she would sustain)

These things go off as a result of ignition of an explosive charge. filling the cabin with smoke / powder. At that distance possible broken neck or "chest" injury. IMO

I wonder about this as well , with many people I know, usually female, including the mother, who sit very close to the wheel, can't be good

I have experienced the curtain air bag deploying in the i30, when i wrote the mothers first one off. it happened so fast can't remember anything, but dont think I came into contact with it, as never received any injuries to the face etc

I've been considering my reply regarding neck injuries, given that the air bags only deploy when there is a significant reduction in forward velocity, the head would be thrown forward by the deceleration, which in turn would be pushed back by the air bag. A neck injury probably wouldn't result, but there would have to be facial injuries of some type.

You should make sure the headrest is positioned correctly as this is 1 part of the safety system.

If it isn't positioned correctly then in an accident the neck will "flop" around and this is what causes whiplash.

I've read recently that whiplash would be all but extinct if headrests are set correctly.

The back of your head, at the top third should be in contact with the head rest ( i think)

The i30's active head restraints help reduce the impact of whiplash, due to the fact they absorb a lot of the energy.

if you mean about the active head restraints, other vehicles are fitted with them, there not going to eradicate whiplash, just assist in lowering the injury it could cause.

The correct position is that your eyes should be level with the top of the headrest

Yeah, Kim is 5 foot 4 inches and I have much the same worries when she is driving

Get them platform shoes so they can sit further back

Many years ago there was a wee man, and I mean wee 4 foot nothing in socks, living down the road and when his car came towards you it looked as if there was nobody driving.. All you could see were 2 eyes peering thro' the steering wheel

Amazing that none of our members has anything to say about the 6 airbag systems now fitted to I30's. I guess it's good that no one is having serious accidents, I wonder what it is like to get boxed in the ears by bags going off in every direction.

However, as the i30 (and others?) head rest is very close or touching against the back of the head if correctly set then there should not be any whiplash caused by a rear end shunt.

Unfortunately today, for many, whiplash = cash.

Don't only the ones needed go off. ie. A front end shunt and the dash/steering wheel ones deploy.
A side shunt and the side airbags (and curtains? go off.
Don't know for sure. Only surmising.

Agreed. But not all at once.
