Today while changing winter tires with summer ones at the mechanic, a threading rod broke! I don't know if i spelled it correctly so here is the pic, one of these is broken:

I can't fix it until monday evening, today i was driving the car around 30km's of city drive, tomorrow i should have driven to my cottage which is 50km's from my city so all in all it would be ~120km until monday fix.

Is it safe to drive that much in this condition and can i make a lot more damage by driving it than it already is ?

Oh yikes.. I would be very nervous of driving with one of those broken (hopefully Trevor (Surferdude) can put a professional spin on it... :sweating:

I second what our two brethren have suggested....   This could turn from a Minor inconvenience into a disaster, not what you want is it ???????

Today while driving it everything was ok, not a minor problem.
Thanx anyway.

     This confirms the psychological behaviour which states that, when someone asks for you opinion, what they actually want is for you to tell them what they'd like to hear, in other words, confirm for them what they've already decided     .....

And yet, I still fall for it even tho I know the rules of the game  AAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Ogi,

Many years ago I did the same thing. When you undo the nuts. Clean the threads first. Mine were filled with brake dust and they bound the thread of the nut which locked. I expected it to be tight, so I used "Incredible Hulk" force and the bolt broke like a piece of swiss cheese.  :-[

On the photo it looks as though all the studs are slightly "necked" in just on front of the wheel hub. If this is the case then it would appear they the wheel nuts were not tightened correctly and the wheel has been loose causing fretting and fatigue of all the studs.

There is no way that I would drive the car without first checking it out - if the studs are necked - it is a sure recipe for losing the wheel at any time.

I thought Hyundai was 5 stud .. I couldn't be bothered going downstairs to check  :-[

At least with 4 bolts to hold the wheel it should be ok for a very short period (please don't drive more than you really have to though..)

So Ogi drives to Finland ... :whistler:

And dazz. The key clue was that was a brake drum in the pic..................

The answer is this.
Without inspecting the other 4 studs I can't tell you it would be safe. Under normal circumstances the 4 will do the job no problem. However, and this is the most important part, if one has been fatigued enough to break when tightening, then the others have quite likely been subjected to the same stress.
If it broke while removing the wheel and the other 4 came off normally then they may be OK. But I think I'd be looking for another car to borrow or putting the trip off for a week.

Now I was wondering about the pic too!  As far as know all i30's are disk brake front & rear.  Also (I think I recall .........) my i30 uses wheel bolts instead of studs & nuts.
However - I would have no hesitation in driving around gently on 4 wheel nuts /studs instead of 5 for a short time.

Hmmm?
For the record ^^^ this above is a "post".
The thread is made up of a heap of "posts" whether on or off topic.
So, your comment should have read, "There's certainly some wheel nuts in this Thread"  :happydance: :happydance:
Sorry.

Of course you are right - thanks.  Just goes to show how much notice I took when I changed over the wheels on mine.
