While watching the series on the TV last night the ship hit the iceberg.

Now a question which I don't think has ever been asked is:
Why didn't the passengers just get onto the floating iceberg and wait for the rescue ships?

Because it was a couple of miles away by the time disaster was evident. A ship weighing thousands of tons covers a long distance stop - even when there is a big hole in it. Especially when there is a handsome couple of film stars on the bow diverting the air flow to the sound of music.

Speaking of which, how are they making a 3D movie from a 2D one?

Computers can do anything.. A lot of (not that expensive) 3D TVs give you the option to watch 2D programs in 3d now with just the push of one button (and the special glasses of course)  :faint:

I have never seen the film, Kim keeps telling me I should watch it, but what's the point when you already know the ending??

The last time I went to the cinema was to see ET.

How long ago was that?

It was before I went to live in the Middle East so must have been before 1984.  Bloody 'ell - what happened to the years?

Here is a link of a photo of an Iceberg near St Johns, Newfoundland, Canada, near where the Titanic sank.

Iceberg, St John's, Newfoundland

As you can see, probably not the easiest to climb onto, particularly considering the water temperature would have been about 4 degrees celsius.  At this temperature, you will probably only survive about two minutes in the water.  Before then you will lose all control of your fingers (they won't work), and the blood vessels in your extremities will contract, trying to conserve heat in the vital organs, limbs become useless (you can't swim).  You will also have a "gasp" reflex upon entering the cold water.

I was sailing these waters in 2009, during July, and the water temp was still only 4 degrees (summer apparently).  While flying we had many layers of clothing under our dry suits, and this only increased our survivability time to about 30 minutes.

So basically what I am saying is, even if the iceberg was close and able to be climbed up onto, the survivors in the water would have been unable to.  The ones in the life rafts would have stayed in them.

Also, I think it was Celine Dion, not Whitney Houston, that sang the theme song in the Titanic.

I agree with what bumpkin said, why see the movie when you know the boat sinks..... :happydance:

I don't go to the movies very often either but I did go see this - under sufferance because I absolutely cannot stand Leonardo di Caprio. However, I enjoyed the movie immensely and even give credit to LdeC for a damn good performance (not enough to convince me to see any more of his movies). But the subject was treated well and there's obviously a lot more to the show than the ending (whicjh isn't actually the ending).
Now I'm waiting with baited breath for "The Hobbit".

I've seen the "trailer" of The Hobbit, it looks awesome.  I did enjoy the LOTR movies as well (so did my eldest son).

Quite a few times.  I usually pull the books out every couple of years and re-read them.

Yeah. They are re-readable - more so than most. I think I read The Hobbit sometime in the 70's.

While watching the series on the TV last night the ship hit the iceberg.

Now a question which I don't think has ever been asked is:
Why didn't the passengers just get onto the floating iceberg and wait for the rescue ships?

Two reasons spring to mind.
1. It was too cold
2. It was too cold.

There was a show on years ago with stories from relatives of some of the survivors. Apparently, when it was realised the ship was sinking, one bloke hopped into the most expensive scotch while everyone else was trying to escape. He figured he was dead meat and no one cared what he was doing. He got absolutely plastered in his last moments, jumped into the sea and apparently survived because of the alcohol.

But those in the life rafts didn't have to climb out of the water, they were already dry.  BTW, water will cool the body 25 times faster than the equivalent temperature air.

Which is why it is a better idea to have a cold beer on a hot day rather than just breathing.
