Second-hand diesel car prices have been driven up to the point where buyers who opt for one over a petrol model are wasting money unless they drive more than 10,000 miles per year, a motor industry expert has warned.

whether used or new car valuation expert Glass’s Guide says unless drivers do 10,000 miles a year for a used car and 6,000 for a new car, they will not recoup the cost.

I do between 15-20k miles so its easily cost effective for me but one thing that would always have me buying a diesel is the fact I prefer driving them over a small engine petrol due to the additional power and torque. I've always found diesel engines to be more reliable than petrol engines too.

Thanks for that, it's very reassuring as I do much less than ten grand a year.  In fact I am now well over year two and still only just over 11.000.   So, yet again I have made a good choice, I must be improving with age   :goodjob:

Nothing new in that.

If I only did 10.000 miles a year, I wouldn't buy a diesel anyway. Many short trips, followed by sooth problems and so on, EGR valve, DPF etc.

Low milage or many short trips allways calls for at petrol car, IMO.

Diesel and petrol price are still very similar down here.. I hope it stays that way as Diesel i40 still on short list for 2014 :whistler: (we do 20,000 + kms PA in our main car - 12,400+ miles)

I would have got a diesel at the time but the wait for one was like 4 and a half months :(

I would even query the 6000 mile p/a on a new diesel.

I think it needs qualified in that you need to keep the vehicle for more than 5 years to make diesel cost effective (in the UK at least) due to the differences in fuel pricing and servicing costs.

Money is always an important factor, but as my driving style is no longer based on blinding acceleration, the diesel concept fits me perfectly. I have stated to the forum before, what a joy hill climbing is compared to my v6 petrol. I'd pay extra just to have it.  :goodjob2:

And we do, gladly, for all the reasons given. A car is more than "economics", surely?

I considered the diesel option for about 1/10th of a second. With my 2500 miles per year, mainly in short hops, I'd be mad to buy one. :)

I also love the way my diesel drive, but I would also be very happy with a petrol turbo.

BTW, diesel has been more than 1,5 DKK (0,26 AUD, 0,16 GBP) cheaper per liter for some time now.  :goodjob2:

Not that I find diesel cheap, but the petrol is very expensive.  :fum:
