I think my first awareness of MP was the flesh wound scene in THG, and only because I had joined the RAAF and was introduced to it by my fellow recruits. :victory:

- My plan to hit UPullIt today was thwarted by rain as well as Mrs G's none too gentle commentary on a worsening gear linkage resistance. Apparently "now the gears don't work" after pulling up behind me as we stop off at the outlaws 3km from home (300kms too close) - she must be a masterful driver indeed!

- So home again - the gears still didn't work apparently - and I separate the vertical linkage arm (with the hex nut at the top of the picture) and push a rubber suspension bush, with its internal diameter increased using a dremel, onto the arm end that transfers longitudinal gearstick motion to the gearbox. The end of this arm is barely visible just to the left of the nut, a little bit of curve showing towards 11 o'clock.

+ Perfect gear action restored, thanks to some familiarity with the limp gearstick problem in the past ... and not so much as a Thank You. :blubber:

I will convert it to English for those that don't speak aviation.

First of all we have a look at the weather forecast and do our planning to complete the task, with minimum fuel required (legally) to fly the route.  This includes fixed reserves, variable reserves and any fuel required for holding (30 minutes or 1 hour, depending on the forecast).  We then provide the client with the payload that they can have for the task.  Usually the payload is much less that what is available, so we add more fuel in so we have more that required (the only time you have too much fuel on board is when you are on fire).  Yesterday the client wanted to put on 5kg less that what was available.  So we lifted with only 30 seconds of "extra fuel" than what was legally required.  Constant fuel calculation and reworking is required to ensure you don't break any rules (ie. landing with below minimum fuel, which can result in loss of licence and therefore loss of job).

True!!  We have to plan to make it to the rig and then to a suitable airfield onshore with the fuel that we have onboard.  The winds have been interesting here over the last weeks due to a stationary low pressure system sitting just near Broome.  It caused strong winds at all levels, and not in the directions that we required.  At one stage we had 57 knots of wind, which required a 38 degree offset to maintain our track.  (Our track was 202 degrees, but had to steer 240 degrees)

Kick off the huge rig rat and you would've had 18min 06 seconds of extra fuel.

We do kick off people if the payload is more than what we can carry.  We give the client the payload available, and they decide who gets "bumped".

They guys (and girls) on the rigs get paid quite well.  When we brought some back the other day (we didn't make it to the rig) they were saying that the guys that they were due to replace would be on double time and a half for the extra shift.  Poor buggers.  Remember, when I land on the rig I am the lowest paid person there (and my salary is pretty good, $150k PA plus daily allowances).
