Hi All,

As my wife has had a great relationship with an old Getz which has rarely let her down, I have decided to follow and get a used Hyundai I30 from 2008/9.

Now, I'm leaning towards the manual CRDI for fuel economy and road tax reasons over the 1.6 petrol.  I'm looking for a quick straw poll from users; Is this the way to go? Are there any reasons why I should be wary?

Looking forward to replies,

Kind Regards,

DrBillHook

Hi and welcome DrBillHook

Both are good cars but which to buy will depend on what you require the car for.

As an example if you do long trips then the crdi will be more fuel efficient.

As with any car make there are issues/problems but if you skim thro' the site you'll find that no major issue effecting lots of i30's has been reported on here.

Welcome to the Club. We get this question a lot! As Lester says, both are great cars. It depends a bit on which motor your wife's Getz had.

We had a 1.6 petrol Getz which was very zippy, The i30 would be less so with the same engine (due to the extra weight)

The Diesel is brilliant for overtaking and climbing hills on the highway motorway, but they are an acquired taste so your wife probably needs to test drive both to see which suits her better..

Hmm, the car is for me rather than the wife; its just that her's has been so good for so long.

I have a 15 mile or so journey to work on the freeway motorway, from then on, its relatively short journeys from community event to community event of about 3-5 miles in duration. So in summary, a lot of urban mixed in with daily trips on the M4.

Swings and roundabouts they say, petrol is cheaper to buy and cheaper cars to service, while the diesal is more expensive to buy, cheaper to run, but more expensive to service.

In that case, mainly short trips I would go a 1.6 petrol. They warm up quicker (The heater takes longer to warm up in a diesel because of the nature of the engine) I loved our first i30 (1.6 CRDi) but we used to and still do, quite a lot of 100 Kilometre + round trips  But a good test drive of both should make your mind up for you..

The Diesel has better resale over here too. I think the costs pretty much average out fairly evenly between the 2 versions if you keep them a few years.  :goodjob:

Does that year model diesel I30 have the DPF over there?

If so you may find the short trips are not enough to run its cleaning cycle.

As for the diesels being more expensive to service, If you avoid using the stealer, err dealer and source your parts well, you will find there is not much in it, especially since the petrol requires a timing belt at 90,000 which will eat a major chunk of any servicing savings.

I've only ever had the diesel (which I love) so can't comment on both.
Dazz is best-equipped to answer as he's had both.

This is a close call to decide on which to buy.

Possibly I would go for the diesel as you will be doing 30 mile round trip.  Also, you will have the power available to use on the motorway should you need to accelerate quickly...

Of course cost does come into the equation..

In the nearly 5 years of owning my diesel I never once noticed the DPF regenerating.  I wonder whether I had one!

I only got rid of my diesel as my son was looking for a newer car than his 10 yo Golf and my mileage had drop considerable since finishing work last year.

I have noticed that the temp gauge on the petrol is at it "normal" mark within a mile or so whereas the diesel would take nearly 5 miles even on a warm day..

Hi DrBillHook

If the diesel have DPF i would think twice.

I have a daily drive for work much like yours in distance, 2 x 25 km, but on main roads, not motorway. I some times find that the DPF starts regenerating on the way to/from work, but the trip is not long enough for the DPF to finish the cycle. You also write that you do a lot of urban driving, that is not suitable for the diesel.

In your shoes, I would take the petrol.

As far as I know all i30 UK diesels have a DPF which is probably pretty expensive to replace if it goes wrong, though I don't recall many people having to have that done as yet - the oldest i30s are nearly five years old now so it must be a fairly reliable unit. Or maybe they are all just about to fail?  :D

The 1.4 and 1.6 'gamma' petrol engines have had chain cams since the first models came out in 2007, only the 2 litre petrol - which was not sold here - has the 'beta' engine with a cam belt.

With the sort of mileage you do I'd probably opt for the petrol, though you are sort of 'in the middle' really. If I were you and found a diesel at a good price I'd probably go for it.

I wouldn't like to wait for miles until the heater started working in the winter though. :)

Actually, I'd advise the diesel, probably coz I enjoy that lovely torque. The diesel engine will outlast the petrol engine, so if you're keeping the car for an extended period, the diesel will serve you well.

Regarding the heater, yes the diesel engine is a bigger heavier meaty motor, but the heater in ours works reasonably quickly. The engine does take longer to reach operating temp but there's plenty of cabin heat still available. For every power stroke of the engine, diesel contains more thermal energy.
