Irvin Gordon, the owner of the 1966 Volvo P1800S, says his style of driving and routine maintenance are the key to his car travelling almost 3 million miles.

At the age of 72 he is confident that he and his car have many more miles ahead of them.

Just crunching some numbers, he's averaged 7.2 mph 24/7 since he was 25 years ago, including when he sleeps. Assuming he has a life, that amounts to a lot of driving. There have obviously been other repairs done, the driver's seat would've given up years ago, with all his bulk.  :fum:

I find this story hard to believe.

2,960,000 miles in 46 years means an average of 176 miles per day - driving 176 miles every day of every year would take some doing. He mentions that he has taken his car to numerous countries over the years including Australia. I reckon he counts the sea miles as well.

The car has probably had 10 engines/rebuilds, numerous gear boxes and rear axles, several sets of wheel bearings, two or three new bodies and Lord knows how many other replacement parts during that time. It's a bit like my favourite broom which I have owned since I first married 53 years ago. It has only had 7 new handles and 12 new broom heads and is still as good as new.

Cynical aint I.................
