'Sick tortoise' in garden was an ornament

TWO women called for help after finding a “sick tortoise” – that turned out to be a clay ornament.

One popped out to buy lettuce and tomato to feed the 5in visitor – but it did not seem hungry. The pair then put it in a cardboard box with breathing holes in it, took it indoors and alerted a local rescue centre.

When volunteer Pauline Adams arrived, the reason for the lack of appetite ­became clear. Red-faced Margaret, of Carlisle, Cumbria, said: “The lady picked it up, turned it over and told me, ‘It’s not dead – it’s made of pot’.

“Underneath was written, ‘Made in China’.
