How many kms do you let your tank get to before filling up?  I picked my car up from the dealership on Tuesday with 1/4 tank and filled up on Wednesday evening with 50km left, giving me about 650km to empty.

Would filling it up before it empties give a more unaccurate reading when trying to calibrate?  Sorry if it doesn't make sense...it sounds different in my head lol.

Hi Vanessa,
When you fill your car shouldn't make any difference to the DTE figure. What does make a difference is how much you squeeze into the tank and what sort fuel consumption you are getting at the time. The figure is calculated By the number of litres multiplied by the average number of kilometres your car is typically achieving per kilometre. So, the longer you have had the car and the better your fuel econ is, the bigger the distance to empty figure. That said, its only a guide and you should easily be able to achieve well beyond its estimations. My DTE usually reads around 800 when I fill it, but i frequently get 1000+ to a tank.
As mentioned before, the amount of Diesel you can get in the tank will also make a big difference to how far you will get on a tank. I believe it is possible to squeeze 62 litres into the i30's 53 litre tank.

Hi all, Haven't posted for a while. We have been flat out with family, building projects and the like. Checked occasionally to see how everyone is going.

The i30 is going really well ( touch wood) and has no issues except that it doesn't get driven enough ( somewhat of a display model at the moment). We have only put 3000k on it and sadly only has been driven around the city mainly in 4th gear as 5th gear would have me breaking the 60 kph limit. The economy is consequently ranging between 6 lph and 7 lph I guess because it never really gets out of 4th gear and Brisbane is full of hills and the traffic chaotic with all new arrivals moving here. I did reset the fuel consumption one day while freeway driving and in 5th at 95 kph and the readout for fuel consumption was 3 to 3.1 lph for the next 30 klms. It then started to increase as I slowed in the traffic and went down through the gears.

Would be interested to know if anybody drives mainly in the city with a CRDi  and mainly having to stay in 4th what their consumption figure is just for a comparision. Mine will go up .2 to .4 whilst waiting at the lights and then go back down again. It has been as high as 7.4 after an extended wait at the lights in traffic. Maybe the computer does have enough data to average after reseting on the freeway.

I also find I can't hold 5th under 1500 rpm with the engine letting me know ( downhill OK).

Anyway hope everyone is doing well and enjoying the New Year.

regards Rbucket

Hi R-B

Good to hear from U M8...

That is normal for the CRDi under load.. If you sit and idle for a while it definitely puts your average up... :'(

Hi Daz,

Thanks for the info. We will have to take it for a decent run to get our average down. I suppose it not bad for 4th gear around the city. Still we don't frequent the servos as we used to do. Wife still loves it especially all that music on call through the USB.

Hi Rusty,

My previous tankful I was babying it around town for the whole tank.  I ended up with 5.6 L/100Km on the display (5.9 L/100Km actual based on the amount of litres I put in when filling it).  This tankful I have been mixing it up a bit with some exercising of the turbo away from the lights, one trip down to the Gold Coast, more use of the A/C and a bit of trailer towing.  The display is currently on 5.9 L/100Km.  I won't know the actual until I fill up next week.  I have done 5700 Km so far.

Hey Rbucket,
Im surprised you are getting so much variation at the lights.  I generally reset the L/100 when I fill up so it would usually only ever change by 0.1 unless I had just filled up.  Are you resetting the L/100 while you are sitting at the lights?

Also, I like to give the turbo 30 seconds before switching the engine off so my routine is drive in, aircon off, go shut the gate, then switch off the engine, and it never goes up more than 0.1 in that time even just after filling.  Perhaps the aircon causes most of the usage at the lights rather than the engine idling?

Oh, I use about 7L/100 in busy Brisbane but that includes an occasional highway run.  1500km on the clock.

Hi Middy and Spillmill,

Thanks for the comparision data. I will have to wait until I get to have a decent run in 5th gear and check the variation then. How's your i30 going Middy? Are you still happy with your choice?

It's going great so far and I don't regret buying it one little bit. It is fantastic.   :D

Ditto Middy,

I touch wood everyday as it just a great car with no faults and great fun to drive. Hills are nothing and the economy although around city in 4th gear is still great. My other car is a old Landcruiser on dual fuel it only get used when going to the dump , picking up hardware or when my wife and I are going in different directions. So we're saving on fuel in it as well. I think it was before Xmas that I put diesel in the i30.

Regards

You know what, I have a strange thing in my i30..

When ever i fill up my tank (to the max), my trip computer gives me that I can do only about 740-760 km.. BUT! Whenever I fill up my tank to the top i also reset my trip and according to it, I make 800-950 km with one tank!

It's like this.. Few days ago I filled up my tank (full) and it was "written" that I can do only 740 km. But when I used half of my tank, it gave me that I can do 420 km (when I check my trip it showed me that I've driven 380 km or so..) and then, when I used almost all of my tank, and when it showed me that I can do only 60 km or so, I checked my trip and saw, that I've done 780 km already. Now..if I "do some really complicated maths" :P that means that 780 km (that I've already done) + 60 km (that I could have done with the rest of the fuel) would be = 840 km driven --> so that means that I would do 840 km with one tank..?

I don't know why, but it's like this every time.. Regardless to the way I was driving the car before.. Well OK..if I've driven it really fast - if the fuel consumptions was a "disaster" then it gives me 700 km or something at the fill up..but ok..

I must say, that the fuel (diesel and unleaded) that we have here, is not as good as in some other countries in EU (Germany,..). Could that be the reason? Oh and if I have approx 5 lit left in the tank, I usually fill 50 lit in.. So that's 55 full tank - and it could definitely "accept" few liters more  :) ..

accim,

There has been a lot written about this already.  Try this link: https://i30ownersclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,38.0.html

I've also discovered that I can get about 59 litres in the tank when it is empty (or near empty).

A few times, when I am driving, the total of Distance Travelled + DTE jumps suddenly by around 200km while driving.  My theory on this is that it does this when the fuel tank gets to the point of designed (53 litre) capacity.  I believe the trip computer resets itself to a full tank just as or before the fuel goes below the full setting.

Huh thanks a lot. You did a great job!

I thought that was just my problem   8)
I wouldn't have asked any questions if the difference was about 50 km, but 200km... It seemed a lot  :-[

The same was in my ex VW.. remember? I told you. I had in full tank of gas 250km left, but sometimes did 400-500km
