I've just had the car (CrDi) serviced at 45k (Hy dealer) and the oil is reasonably black again after about 20km.  I wouldn't have expected this.  Any thoughts from anybody?
The replacement oil was Castrol 5W40 Synthetic.

When an oil change is performed not every last drop of the old oil is removed so what has remained has just discoloured the new stuff.....

After an oil change the new oil goes black very quickly.  It surprised me the first time.  I can't remember how quickly the original oil turned black after I bought the car from new.

Why the query re the oil type?  Anything unusual about it?

Sorry, I didn't follow-up on this. When I asked I hadn't remembered Castrol having a 5w40. I did look it up and assuming it's the one they call Edge with Titanium it's probably very similar to the 0w40 but a bit thicker both when cold and when hot. The extra viscosity is also maintained when very hot as is shown in the quite high HTHS figure of 3.8. Forgetting the units, this measurement is done at 150^oC and I do consider this specification very important for our cars with hot, hot turbo bearing.

Probably a toss up between the 0w40 and the 5w40. The former probably will have the edge (sorry) for economy and the latter might just be more robust as a lubricant. All guesses.

Google block EGR, have posted on here about blocking it, done this on 2 i30's no side effects , expect nice clean oil! The EGR is dumping S@#tT back into your engine! Also done it 3 4x4 diesels, gets a check engine light & error code [scanguage p0401, insufficient EGR flow|.
