Hi all!

I've been trolling around and seeking help ever since I bought my i30. Everyone's really friendly, so thank you! Had some dramas with the dealer but ultimately decided that the effort is not worth it. So while I think I overpaid by at least $900 (compared to the conservative (not mad!) discounts some of you are getting), I probably scored a bad deal but it's my first car and I'll learn. I do thank my lucky stars that I didn't spend $3000 on paint protection, rust proof and all that crap. My friends fell for it on other cars.. they added it onto the cost of the car and then just deducted that price to make it look like a good deal.

My i30, if there's no trouble, should be the Oct release MY09 model (built Oct) auto SX petrol. It's steel gray and will come with all my airbags, floor mats, dash mats, ipod cable (i need my ipod always) and darkest legal tint. I originally wanted red but it won't be available for another 3 months. Only problem is that it has done a couple of test drives and the Ks are a bit high (about 100k) but I'm happy. I am going to name it "Little Miss Stupid Mistake". I'm sure it'll be a great car and I'll truly enjoy it once I get over my disgruntlement with the dealer. In 2 years, I'm going to a car broker like some of you or get some tutorials on how to bargain. I can't bargain and I blame my dad. He buys his car for close to retail value over the phone without test-driving or anything so I have never been taught to haggle. His dealer loves him.

It's freaking hot down here at the moment and my old car's aircon is not blasty enough. Hopefully my i30 comes soon! I'm so excited!

By the way... is there anyone who could direct me to a place where they will do a spoiler for cheap in Brisbane? The dealer won't give it to me free!!!! Says it cost $650...

Last quote I got for the rear spoiler was $363 supplied in the colour of your car.
This is a supply only price, not installed. Mine was supplied and fitted for $375 when the car was bought, so I would expect around the $400 mark.

If this is within your price range I can make some further enquiries for you.

Welcome Cazza, hope you enjoy the car when you get her, remember a deal which you can afford is always a good one despite what others may have managed to get :D

$3000 for paint protection? Jeepers!

My dealer offered paint and upholstery protection for £249, including a full tank of petrol. They also offered guaranteed value protection (make up the difference between what the insurance company pays and the invoice price, if the car is stolen or written off) for 3 years, for £299. I said no to both...

650???? you sure??? coz my dealer quoted me a price of $350 (excluding fitting), but even including fitting it shouldn't be that expensive. Check with your dealer again. It should be more than $400.

Congrats
cheers

Hey Cazza, I'm from QLD and got mine through betterdeal.com.au (winning dealer turned out to be marooka).  I don't think I got an amazing price but it was certainly better than the first dealer I spoke to! (i got: manual diesel slx mats ipod tint for 28500)

Just curious, what was the problem that came up with the dealer?  Only tell us if its not gonna annoy you more talking about it!

Enjoy the car and just appreciate the lessons you learnt for when you come to negotiate on a ferrari in future (oops, i mean i30 supercar :P)

EDIT: I went with betterdeal cause i didnt want to spend all the energy fighting the dealer but probably didnt get an amazing price either...

spill, did you do the reverse auction or accept an offer from a dealer?
I went to betterdeal as well and a dealer gave me a good offer, so I went to a local dealer to compare. I could have saved a lil bit more at local dealer but I decided unless it's like $1000 less I would go through the better deal dealer as he gave me a no stuffing around good price.

I did the reverse auction, the saving was exactly $1000 off better deal's drive away price - but that price was already about $500 better than the driveaway price list the first dealer gave me.  Really, he gave me a price list, didnt even mention whether they would do any better, what a joke!

So, with the $500 of extras i specified i figure i saved about $2000 compared to the dealers price list and $1500 off the better deal driveaway price.  Its funny how they (betterdeal) don't seem to make any money based on the extras you list (apart from metallic paint) - bit of a revenue leak there i suspect.

So, Jay, you didn't do the auction?  It was fun, best offer was $800 off until right near the end!  The dealer who won (and I got the car from) actually said it was his final offer, he wasn't even doing the bidding it was one of his sales buddies who had done it before ;)

I don't fault the salesman. He's been awesome. Oh well... before I launch into the story... no comments like "You overpaid, idiot... i only paid $1 for my i30!"
I thought I had a great deal when I was bargaining with the salesperson coz he gave me 1400 off the "list" price and $3k for my 10yo Pulsar Plus Auto. I was going to sell the Pulsar to a friend for 3k anyway (my Pulsar done 190000k and the clear coat's off the top, plus the steering wheel's gone from sun damaged. I told him that of course. Redbook listed my car for abot 3150 but could have gone down since) but I didn't want to as if anything happens to th Pulsar, I don't want to lose a friend.

When I got back, I realise that the dealership had quoted me the price for the MY08 model with the Protectz. That came up to $700 more than the actual price listed by Hyundai, bringing my discount down to about $700, rather than $1400. I always thought getting 1.5k off retail is good and if I had known the actual retail price, I wouldn't have agreed to the deal and continued shopping. And to make matter worse,  I was promised the car in 7 to 10 days but have to wait now for about 3 months due to the options I put on them which has to be factory fitted. ARGH! So I settled down for a steel gray floor stock but they had like done 4 to 5 test drives. But I need a car fast, not in 3 months. And I'm worried that Hyundai's going to have another strike as their labour union is really strong.  The salesman was actually really nice although sometimes I feel like he stretched the truth a little... hahaha. I like the fact that he still tried to make right with me. I was going to cancel the contract but adviced by the lawyer that the trouble is not worth it and I may lose my deposit. I'm also in med school, so I need all my time... and a whole lot more! I weighed the pros and cons and decided I can deal with the loss coz I'm not the kind who sell my car for a new one in 3 years. I'm going to keep this car for 5 to 6 years. Hopefully the depreciation between an 08 complied and 09 complied vehicle will be smoothed out somewhat at that time.

In the end, I paid 24800 (21800 changeover) for my petrol SX. He threw in the metallic paint, the dashmat, ipod cable and darkest legal tint. Getting a spoiler with mud flaps for $250, I hope. The price also includes floor mats.

And they did offer me a diesel Auto SX for 26000. I declined as it had done 200+ks and was april built and was MY08. If I'm losing money on the complied year due to my need for a car, I won't lose the money on an earlier model. Plus it's black. My boyfriend already has a black Mazda 6 and it's hard to keep clean!

I don't know if that's a good deal as it is complicated by my terrible trade-in (believe me, if my pulsar had no paint and sun damaged trouble, I would have sold it privately for 5k which I think is reasonable... not those far out prices some people on drive.com.au tried to command. I also had a lot of trouble selling a pretty nice Mazda 121 and in the end only got 625 more than what I could have traded in for about 3 years ago).

There. The story is said and I shall forever hold my peace... maybe not. It'll all come out in a rant tommorow when I go to the medical keg and see all my friends!!! hahahahaha! I guess if I have got that price without being lied to, I would have accepted it graciously. I just hate being lied to even though I know the salesman is quite unaware (they hadn't updated their prices). I guess I'm just the sort of  person who holds a lot of faith in trust and ethical dealings as my dad's a businessman and he's always very honest and taught me the value of doing honest business dealings. I know car dealers have a bad rep for being honest but I guess in the end, they're just like you and me, worrying about the economy, their jobs, and, to quote Bush, "putting food on their family". They have since updated their prices and I hope, at least, this mean that other customers will be able to negotiate better prices. This is also why I am terrified that massive factory discounts will be given out in late Feb/March when the crisis hit Hyundai hard. That would make resale terrible! Hopefully they just flog the Getz.

No gloating please... but if you wanna send chocolates my way, i'll graciously accept! I'm just lucky that I got a no interest loan from my dad to get this car. He hates hyundai...toyota fan.

Firstly Cazz .. nice to see a younger person that uses paragraphs and knows how to spell... makes reading longer posts much more pleasurable

and yes you are right.. It is extremely hard to sell most cars second hand (privately) for much more than trade-in value (I also tried) and never sell to a friend ...

I look forward to seeing pictures of the "spoiler with mudflaps..."

I love the Bush quote.. where are we going to get our laughs now....

as you also said if you keep your i30 for 5 or 6 years any discounting this year shouldn't effect you too much (Don't listen to anti-Hyundai talk)

Finally, think your dad will like the i30 once he drives or at least rides in it...

Dazz! You made me paranoid about my grammar and spelling! It was an actrocious entry. Before I did med, I had a half-done Masters in History. So yes, I know the value of paragraphs and good, non SMS/MSN spellings. So I'm not that young!!! :P My age remains a secret.

Yah... I reckon "Spoiler with mudflaps" will look really cool. Who needs to protect the tyres from mud anyway? It's the spoiler that needs protecting!

I love Bushrisms. Maybe one day we can really "co-exist" with "fish". Fish are nasty! They just swim and poop in our seas, lakes and oceans. I hate fishes. I just want to eat all of them.

I did say "younger" person (I'm 53 this year) Many people these days don't use paragraphs and spelling is "scary" .. though your post was great..

Where did the fish thing come from

Cazz, if you take $1k off that trade in price, that's what you'd probably have gotten for your pulsar, if you'd waited a long time. Because you don't want to sell to a friend (give, yes, sell, not unless you know everything that's wrong with the car and can detail it to them completely and they're still excited to pay what they're happy to pay - you can't dictate a price else they feel obligated... it's very messy. I like giving cars away rather than selling, for this reason - they can't complain! :P)

Anyway - take 1k from your price, and you've got a good price - VERY good price if on-roads and dealer delivery etc included?

But I know what you mean about bad tastes - regardless of how much you pay or if your dad helps etc... if you get lied to, you feel gullible, you feel ripped off, you feel bad, you regret purchase.

My example: I got a free loan car for a few weeks, and free mats! But I had asked for & I thought I was getting i30 mats - instead I got "Hyundai-compatible" mats - that I could have bought for $20 from Kmart. I now have to pay $110 for official i30 mats. Who buys a new car and gets generic mats? It looks cheap. When I complained about this, saying I don't want Kmart mats, I want i30 mats, this is a new car, I get the sales manager calling me names! Because I'd already paid for the car, what can I do?
And they lied to me over and over again about delivery, for example I know they don't register the car with the RTA until they have it at the dealership. The rego shows 7th of Jan, but on 8th Jan they finally return my call at 5:45pm "we only got the car at 5pm and so can't pick up till tomorrow (9th)"... in the morning of the 9th they call me and tell me "long wait for pre-delivery, you can pick up at 4pm" - I got furious and I said they can put my car at the front of the line for pre-delivery because I waited 2mths already! I ended up getting the car at 1pm. But I still feel like they treated me like poo, so I am dissatisfied, even though I know I got a REALLY good price.

blurgh! Finally spat that out. Still angry about that myself.

It was on roads. I console myself with that number too... like take 1k off the trade in... it turns out to be 23800 and it's not that bad. Now I'm worried they're going to give me generic stuff for dashmats and ipod cable! hahahaha!

It's really the little things that piss us off hey? I think maybe your extraordinary price made them a little sour but they shouldn't have been so rude. Like if what you are offering them is unreasonable, then they shouldn't have accepted it. If they had, they should have still treated you like a valued customer. It's not like you pointed a gun at them and told them to sell it to you for that price! Personally, I think the margin is pretty good for Hyundais. If they can produce a Getz for 12990 driveaway....

I had my spoiler added as part of the deal.  When we were talking prices with the dealer, he wanted $695 for the spoiler (I got it for $495) and he wanted $595 for the window tint (I got that for $495 - yes it was a bit dearer than I could have got it done for at Tint-a-Car but then I would have had the hassle of taking the car to the nearest Tint-a-Car place which is about 800km away).  I declined the paint and fabric protection pack for $1,500 as part of the deal.  I might get some mudflaps put on when I take it to the dealership for its 1000km service - never thought to get those put on in the first place  :-[.

Thanks Cazza  :D  It looks nice now - just wait til it gets calcium spots from the cr@p water here.  It is impossible to get off the windows once it is dried on there.  Will have to get busy with the metho/vinegar mix as soon as I've washed it and used the chamois to dry it off.
