XXXX Gold is now Australia's most popular beer, it overtook VB last year.  It is a nice tasting beer IMHO.

The reason it is cheaper is that it is a "mid-strength" beer (around 3.5% alcohol from memory).  This reduces the tax that is imposed on the sale of the beer, hence, cheaper to sell.

Try it, it isn't bad!!

Changing to a new beer is fine but you need to give your taste buds time to adjust (a bit like changing fuel octane rating - needs a few tank fulls to show a result).
A half dozen cartons should do it.  :snigger:
Being a Queenslander I've always liked XXXX and as fatboy says, the lower strength is a bonus.

This "XXXX" beer, is it the same we used to get shoved down our throats (no pun intended) in the UK advertisements as "Australians wouldn't give a Castlemaine XXXX for anything else" ?

Just wonderin'

Castlemaine XXXX it is.

But you need the stuff that's brewed here.

Like Fosters over there - it's OK but not as good as it is here. And Fosters isn't top of the tree here. :snigger:

Can't stand that dish water coloured stuff they call lager.
(And I'm being polite with that description)

Give me a good full bodied amber coloured bitter any day...

30 odd years ago when I did drink, XXXX was the ducks guts, followed closely by Fosters,I am just stunned at the amount of different beers these days, christ I would even drink Southwark in those days as long as it was a hot day and the grog was cold

Regardless, I'm a Tassie beer convert, preferably Boags, I like Jimmy.

The water in Tas is so much cleaner, Castlemaine XXXX, seen the Brisbane river lately.  :fum:
Southwark, seen the Torrens river / creek, lately.
VB, well you'd have to be Yarra to drink that stuff.   :tomato:

XXXX Gold isn't "bad", I still wonder how they get the cat to squat over the bottle for Southwark!!

You can't really compare Belgian beers with the local beers. Hoegaarden is a far more sophisticated thing than XXXX. Its a wheat beer for a start and almost a meal in a bottle on its own. But if you just want to drink beer and aren't terribly discerning, that's what mid strength beers were designed for.

As pointed out the mid strength alcohol content makes it cheaper. It would also be that from memory your in Victoria, and there trying to get someone down there to realise the advantages of mid strength alcohol (other than you have to drink it at the cricket and footy), so it is cheap to buy market share.

I'll stick to the home brew, and Coopers,  James Squire and Matilda Bay when I venture away from the keg. I might spend a bit more, but I can taste the difference, at least for the first 6....

After the Great International Beer Festival, in London, some of the brewery presidents decided to go out for a beer.

The guy from Corona sits down and says, "Hey Senor, I would like the world's best beer, a Corona."
The bartender dusts off a bottle from the shelf and gives it to him.

The guy from Pilsner says, "I vud like ze best beer in the vorld, give me 'Ze King Of Beers', a Pilsner."
The bartender gives him one.

The guy from Coors says, "I'd like the only beer made with Rocky Mountain spring water, give me a Coors." He gets it.

The guy from Castlemaine in Australia peers through the corks hanging from his hat and says “I’d like a tinnie of XXXX - God’s gift to beer drinkers”
The barman duly hands him one.

The guy from Banks brewery in the UK Black Country sits down and says, "Give me a Coke."
The bartender is a little taken aback, but gives him what he ordered.

The other brewery presidents look over at him and ask "Why aren't you drinking a pint of Bank’s Special?"

The Bank's Brewery president replies, "Well, I figured that if all you guys aren't drinking beer, neither would I.".............. :drinks: :kissmyass:
