The missus has been going on, and on, and on, about me having a new car while she bumbles around in her 1997 RAV4.

I kept telling her how my job provides the income and a reliable drive is soooo important so I should always have an uptodate car while she uses hers to sort out her 3 horses.

Anyway, recently she's been telling me she can smell petrol when she refills, so last Saturday I went to the petrol station and filled the RAV4 myself. Jeebers, was a stench. For every gallon I put in, a quarter of it was dumped on the forecourt. Jeebers. What a waste of fuel.

Anyway, I asked questions on a Toyota forum and the replies said the filler/breather tube were probably corroded, as happens on that age of the model.

Checked it out, and yes.. the filler pipe looked like a cheese grater  :'(

So, decided to kill two birds with one stone and located a replacement RAV4 for her.

Went today, test drive, liked it, shook hands, part-exchanged her RAV4, and did the deal.

Looked at the invoice when he was writing it out...

...An ex Hyundai dealership (Stockport, UK)... bust because of the current climate. Got the car cheap too.

Here's a pic anyway

Looks very tidy M8 (for a Toyota)

Reminds me of something that happened when I was about 10 Y/O...

My Step-dad had a Car Dealership which sold BMC vehicles and Volvo and VW...

A good customer bought in his near new Morris 1100 for dad to babysit while he went overseas...

anyway Mum decided to take it home one night (to give it a run) and my S-D filled it with petrol for her...

On the way home there was a bad smell of fuel so she didn't light a cigarette like she usually would.

She forgot to mention to the S-D about the fuel smell (which was even worse the next morning)

So when she took me to school she didn't have a cig and drove fairly carefully...

Coming over the hill near my school she applied the brakes and the car slid all over the road - nearly skittling my teacher  :-[

Then we went onto the busy main drag and took the side out of a near new HD holden (Aussie car)

We were both shaken but o/k but the Holden owner went right off..

The owner of the car cut the fuel filler off and left a dummy cap on the outside (to stop people milking his fuel) but hadn't told S-D

So he had filled the boot not the tank with petrol.

Fortunately, he had a bodyworks as part of the dealership so the car was fixed as good as new and don't think the owner ever found out!

DON"T THINK I'VE SHARED THAT STORY BEFORE (GOT LOTS MORE)

Sorry M8 wasn't trying to do that..

P.S. I forgot to explain the reason the car slid all over the place is the fuel was dripping out of the boot all over the back tyres...

No probs mate.

Since I posted this "spooky" thread I got a call from that ex-dealership asking me if I had the release key for the spare wheel cover (attached to the hatch). Told him I'd post it on and also asked him if he remembered what they'd part-ex'd this RAV4 for. Hoping he'd say an i30, he said a Santa Fe. Ah well, maybe not as spooky as it could have been :D

It was RAV4 or nothing.

I offered her the "nothing" but that was rejected :D

An i10 would have been cheaper
