I'm new here and my name is Zoran and I'm from Sweden. I'm about to by me a Hyundai i30 1.6 Crdi/90 and i was wondering if anyone could tell me what the difference between the 90hp vs. 115hp is, is it just the software?

/Zoran

  • First Lesson. Stick em with the pointy end.
Not only software.
There's a difference in hardware.
I think there's difference in valves, compression and etc.
Sorry that I can't write more.

I talked with my local dealer, and he explained with more technical words. And he said that 90hp is older technology than 115hp. And the difference is not only in chip.

I don't think thats right. I'm only talking for how its in Sweden. it looks like its the same engine the only differens is that the 90hp is a "environment car" here in Sweden that means that you get a premium (about US $1200). the 90 hp came after the 115 hp.

CO2 = 119 g/km for the 90.
CO2 = 125 g/km for the 115.
the Swedish government gives you a premium if your car is below 120 g/km thats the limit for the so called "environment car".

I have added a link to a Swedish page where it defines the difference between the cars. sorry its in Swedish but if you schroll down almost to the bottom you could See the information. I talked to my dealer and he sad that it now difference between them " whit a some uncertainty".

I have checked the difference between the valves, its the same, the compression its the same everything is stated in the link i posted before.
valves = Cylinderdiameter/slaglängd (swedish)
compression= Kompressionsförhållande

115hp has bigger turbo it is garret 17 series and 90 15 series.

Basic engine is the same.

In the 115hp version has litlle more boost and different timing in the program.
Also the diesel pump has more pressure in 115hp version.

But you can allways change the software maps (ECU Tuning) on 90hp CRDI and get to 115hp easy (if that's enough :) ) The cheapest way or were you just wondering what's different?

No.
You can only chip your 90hp to 105hp.
115hp to 135hp.
These are options.
You cannot chip 90hp to 115hp. That's impossible.

Maybe at your tuners is impossible.  :rolleyes:

For example SKN or Competence Tuning has this maps:

Leistung   90 PS (66 kw)   120 PS (88 kw)
Drehmoment   235 Nm   290 Nm
Drehzahl   2000 U/min   2000 U/min
V max   172 km/h   190 km/h

EDIT: we can have a test with my G-Tech on my friends chiped i30.. and we can post the results :)

I`m talking for Software tuning.
And, when you want 90hp, u may change back. And no one knows that you changed you compression.
If Hyundai dealer find out, we loose our warranty.

As MyChemR already said. It is possible to tune your car from 90 hp to approx 115 hp, just with chip. Maybe your local tuners do not offer programs, that tune the car more then 15 hp, here 25 hp is least you can get. Many cars are chipped 30 hp and more..

I tuned (chip tuning - software tuning) my i30 from it's original 90 hp to almost 115 hp (i don't know exact number, but it was 114,6 hp I think) and torque from 235 Nm to almost 280 Nm. The difference is remarkable. 0-100 kmh was before almost 15 sec, now it's approx 11,5 s; 80-120 kmh is I think 4 seconds better.. Top speed is also higher - before I could do only 185 kmh (by speedometer), now I can do 200 kmh+ (according to speedometer) etc..

Here's the pic of 90 hp i30 + 25 hp (chip). The picture is a disaster (phone) and it was raining, that's why I couldn't drive faster..but ok, I'll try to make better picture next time ->

Sorry but that´s not right. :wink:It´s the same on 115 as the 90 HP,the Garrett GT1544V!

I have also an Ecu-tuning (software upgrade,not chiptuning!) from 115hp to 140 HP  and a torque of 305NM!(original 255),and this since a year. :rolleyes:

0-100 : 11.5 sec original (after upgrade approx 8,5 sec)

And note,it´s been taking by my Hyundai-dealer.So,i will not loose my warranty!

At 200km/h,it´s finish :wink:

The I30 is limited by Manufacturer at this Vmax!And this Limitation is worldwide..so you need a Vmax Speed Defencer to change this.(HKS p.ex available on Ebay)  :lol:

I think he was talking about speed on his speedometer, where the speed is not 100% real.

Vmax limit can also unlock every better tuner.

So one´s more whats the difference between these two? Could anyone give me facts. Ive been given two different awnsers one that the turbo is different and one that the turbo is the same. If the turbo is the same the engine is the same than it should just be a software difference. Corect me if im wrong, but if its only the software that is different why is than that when you tune the 90 hp you get aprox. 110 hp and whit the 115 hp aprox 140 hp? something has to be different and it aint the engine. what is?

We can't compare these dyno graph's with one's from here as you state BHP then PS then DIN, were here we mostly use KW or corrected SAE HP TQ and TQ in FT pound not NM, but not saying your dyno numbers are not impressive just saying we can not directly compare as no one here seem to use DIN correction it shows more power than SAE correction, you need to correct to compare as\weather and air quality so much different.

Yes, I was talking about the speed according to spedometer, not actual speed.. Actual speed is probably around 190 kmh :wink:

The difference between 90hp and 115hp is probably not just in software.. The fact, that you can tune 90 hp i30 to let's say 115 hp and not more, probably means something.. 115 hp is tuned to 135-140 hp.. (ECU-software-chip tuning)..

My local Hyundai dealer also asked me if I want to chip-tune (ECU tuning) from 90 to 115 hp. One mechanic also said that the engines in the 90hp and 115hp i30 are the same..but I'm not sure about that.. They don't tune the cars themselves..they take the cars to local tuners, where they (tuners) upload new software (i find the tuners, to which I've driven my car, to be better than the ones my Hyundai dealer does). And on the Hyundai, they said that you don't lose your warranty, because in case something goes wrong, they overwrite the software with "stock" one.. At least that's what they do here..

Have a nice day

Tuner can delete the program later..

In my country the VW, AUDI, SEAT, SKODA have a arrangement with one local tuner.. and they do not lose warranty. (for other cars I dunno :-[ ) It's probably in every country different?

The turbo's type is written in the plate which is at the turbo's compressor near the air intake.

It is most cases written like this:

There in garrett pages turbo's are Wastegate turbochargers, we are talking Variable Geometric Turbocahrgers in i30 diesel cars.

(You can see it if you check that 1544 version in there, it is wastegate turbo and there is no V or VA versions data in that site.)

I think Honeywell owns the garret vgt technology.

Here is vhat I found from internet now:
http://www.honeywell.com/sites/portal?smap=turbo&page=Product-Name&theme=T18&catID=CC06B6F2F-3761-E658-1532-C2E530CB1CA4&id=HC0C20A90-8BF3-4514-B83B-8AF30E63E6CE&c=n&sel=5

I think now that there could be different turbo, based where the car is build and when?

I am now so interested that i have to dig more of this  :cool:
