      Caloundra, Queensland.
Recently drove from Caloundra to Darwin.
Lots of stories to tell and pics to show but these four were taken on the outskirts of Kynuna, 300 klms SE of Mount Isa. Pop, 95.
My daughter was driving and spotted this Brolga (miles form any water), on the roadside. We stopped and it wandered over to say "Hi".
Note the roos in the background of the last shot in which you can also see by its image in the rear view mirror, how close it is.  :scared:

From Wikipedia.

Kynuna is a town in north-west Queensland, Australia, on the banks of the Diamantina River. The town is located on the Landsborough Highway, in the Shire of McKinlay local government area, 1,521 kilometres (945 mi) north west of the state capital, Brisbane and 303 kilometres (188 mi) south east of the regional centre of Mount Isa. At the 2006 census, Kynuna had a population of 95.[1]

The town was established as a teamsters' camp at a supply point for the nearby Kynuna pastoral station, at a place where five roads met the Diamantina River. The town was gazetted in 1894 and at one stage soon after had a population of around 700 people and was home to three pubs.[2] Local legend claims that the suicide of a local shearer named Samuel Hoffmeister at Combo Waterhole near Kynuna in 1894 was the inspiration for the Banjo Paterson song "Waltzing Matilda". Paterson was at one time engaged to the daughter of a local squatter and visited the area.[3]

Today, the town has one pub, the Blue Heeler Hotel. The pub was built as the Kynuna Hotel in 1889.[2]

My daughter's 2012 Accent, Lester.
Given your previous occupation, I ain't saying how quick it is. :whistler:
It drove beautifully.

Over the years I've done a lot of long distance driving - just simply driving from Sydney to Brisbane or Caloundra or the reverse, sometimes alone. Not to mention plenty of rallies when we would start mid afternoon on a Saturday and get home mid to late morning Sunday.
But this is by far the longest concentrated drive I've ever done in my 65 years. 3,500 klms in 3½ days. Sharing the drive with my daughter helped but overall I probably drove 2,300 of those klms.
There were a number of firsts for me.
The length of the drive.
First time LEGALLY at 130 kph.
First time driving in NT (although I've been to the Alice and Uluru).
First time to Darwin which was the only Australian capital I hadn't visited.
First time I'd driven further west than Emerald in Qld. (although I've been to Mt Isa).

All in all a most enjoyable trip.
I've had some wonderful shared bonding sessions with my kids through the years but this one with my daughter proably tops them all.
As we drove away from the brolga, we were both literally giggling like schoolkids.

Thanks Surferdude - Trev. Nice reply, glad you enjoyed the drive and time with your daughter, family is precious.  Ah, I see you are 1948 vintage like myself, good year that, ask Prince Charlie.
