An inquiry on behalf of a friend - occassionaly the ignition switch refuses to turn when the key is inserted.  She has tried both keys with the same result, then, after some jiggling around (the key, not her) it turns and the engine can be started.  This is annoying.  Does anyone have similar experience or knowledge of this ?  The car has 18,000 Kms only.

Has she tried wiggling the steering wheel at the same time?

I never heard of a problem like that, the steering lock can cause exactly that effect but it isn't faulty, the elasticity in the tyres and power steering can conspire to do exactly as described.

Keith got there before me...

It sound like the steering lock.  If she moves the steering wheel, and it can be very firm, then the ignition frees up.   :goodjob: :goodjob:

Move steering wheel left or right to give a bit of free movement at the same time as she turns the key.

However, if this has just started then it could be the lock mechanism requires attention.

Have a chat to the dealer if she is still concerned.

Some graphite grease into the key cylinder could do the job.

Graphite powder is better in a lock as it doesn't attract and hold particles.

No guys, taking any weight off the steering was the first thing I also checked.  It is not that.  It feels to me like the key (both keys tried) is not properly operating the actual lock barrel.  The car needs to go to the dealer, 2011 model (warranty).  I have also noted a distinct "notch" feel to the steering in the dead straight ahead position when driving, feels a little strange I must admit.  Thanks for the input though.
