Hi all.
I've just bought my daughter a 2008 i30 5 door diesel in continental silver.   I'm a newbie to Hyundai being used to Holden and VW (diesel) so please excuse me if I ask some silly questions.
We went for a test drive yesterday and I was very impressed in the car.   It has 102,000 km and has been owned by an older couple in the Wimmera.   Consequently, the paint on the sills is sand blasted and there are a few small paint chips in the front but otherwise faultless.   These will be attended to in the next few weeks.
I maintain all my own cars and am keen to get to know the i30 as well as the others.   I always go over a car when I buy it and will be doing so this weekend if it doesn't hit 40 like they predict.
Apart from checking everything, is there anything else I should look for?   I do plan on changing the coolant as I don't think it was done at 100.000.   The transmission will be serviced in the next few weeks.
What sort of oil is recommended for the engine and transmission?
I hope to become familiar with the car and be helpful to others on the forum in the future.

cheers....Andrew (adyadad)

Hi Andrew and welcome to the forum.
They're pretty reliable cars when serviced properly so you shouldn't have too many worries.
There were a handful of cars that displayed some issues with the four speed auto so keep an eye on that, although the vast majority were fine.
The diesel is a good little puller though.  :)

Hi Andrew and  :welcum:

There are numerous discussions about suitable oils for the Diesel on here..

Fully synthetic oils like Shell Helix Ultra, Castrol Titanium Edge Sport and Mobil 1 are all fairly popular with our members.

Here are some links about servicing and oil change on the CRDi

:wttc: Andrew,2008 only just done 100k that's pretty good, both mine are just two YO and there up near that now,as Dazz said so many opinions on oils, personally I like Penrite full syn, extremely easy to service, just make sure you get the right oil filter as they changed about 2009-2010,the later models have a slightly longer filter.

As Dazz has pointed out the links to servicing, you'll find all the information here that you need.

Welcome Andrew, check when the fuel filter was changed, as they should be changed around 30,000 if was not changed @ 90,000 i would change it . also as Rick pointed out there is two different type oil filters, the early type was from the release date that was around late 2007, then about April or may 2008 they changed to a different size filter, i had a june built 2008 CRDi & it used the later (same as new one's use today ) as the filter is in a housing at front of motor, very easy to get too, but if you buy wrong filter ….. so check build date.
good luck with it.

Thanks to you all for the welcome as well as the information.   I'll be taking it all on board and doing what I can on Saturday as I now have to work on Sunday.
Great and useful information on the oil filter.   I'll have to check that out.   It's a March 2008 build so I'll certainly be on the lookout for the filter size.
We don't have the car until Friday so I'm not 100% sure what needs to be done but I'll check it out anyway.

cheers...Andrew

Hi Andrew

 :wttc:

The paint on the i30 is not the strongest, so fit some mudflaps on the front, if not already done.

I'm at 199.000 km in my 2008 CRDi

We got it yesterday and I'm impressed.
The original owners details were in the front of the book so I gave him a ring.   It's been logbook serviced all it's life and the trans and fuel filter were done at 90,000.   It's now at 98k.   Brakes are near new.
The coolant looked a bit watery so I've flushed the system replaced it.   The coolant was surprisingly clear and may have been done but I had already drained it before I rang the previous owner.   At least it's done and close enough to the 100,000 mark so a couple of thousand k's won't matter.
I've checked the oil filter and it's the longer one (110 mm) being a February, not March 08 build as I thought.
The cars in really good condition and has apparently never been bent.   I'm happy about that.   Just a few stone chips and the odd parking dent.

cheers...Andrew

The Transmission is a win, because that is quite expensive....

Next service is a minor at 105k. By 5 door are you talking about the wagon.

I've got a 2010 wagon which is at 98,900 wonder who will get there first

Welcome to the forum.
Goodluck with the new acquisition!

Regardless of age, give it a good clean around and behind the front guards.
I unbolt the bottom of the guards and poke a pressure cleaner in there to blow out any crap, stop the rust before it starts.

Beerman...It's a hatch.

deBounce...Already have.   I've had too many cars rust out there over the years to overlook that.   Thanks for the tip anyway.
