I am a member of the British Airways executive club and get regular Emails from them tempting me to book flights and earn more air miles (Avios points) etc.

Today I received an Email telling me of an addition to their web site - if there are any other BA Exec club members here you may be interested. They have added a button to your account to check on how many miles you have flown with them and some more data.

in my case the data is :-

Miles flown           : 358,679

Minutes in the air : 43,072

Cities visited         : 23

Countries visited   : 14

When I worked in the Middle East for 12 years I did a lot of travelling - but not just with BA. I also used Gulf Air, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Air France, Japan Airlines, Qantas. Lufthansa, American Airlines, Continental, Royal Jordanian and a few more I can't remember.

Hence I dread to think what the grand total is.  The thought that I have spent the equivalent of 30 days in the air just with BA and probably as many again with other airlines is sobering.

Its a bit of a shock that I have spent 2 months (x 24 hours a day) of my life at 35,000 feet...................

I'm not a keen flier. I guestimate probably 200 hours total encompassing about 35 return trips to various parts of Australia.

I'm never gonna get anywhere near Alan's figures.

Been around the world a few times, plus to NZ and a range of Oz destinations.
Did a fair bit of flying when I was working for Goodyear but still only within Oz (except for one to the USA and one to NZ).

Interesting bit of trivea.
My first flight was paid for by Wheels magazine who were based in Sydney and they'd just taken over a couple of magazines I wrote for. They flew me to Sydney to discuss a full time job.
The deal was done and a week later, someone else bought Wheels which eventually ended up as part of the Packer empire.

So the deal was off.  :disapp:

The first edition of Wheels mag I purchased was March 1970. The Rambler Hornet was on the front cover with the caption "Hornet with a sting". Why can't I remember other stuff, like this.  :(

I've still got the mag somewhere, too.

I've spent about 120 days in the air (approximately 2900 hours, or 174,000 minutes), in aircraft that I have been flying.  With an average speed of 120 knots (some go faster, some slower) that gives me a distance covered of 348,000 miles.  This would be nowhere near Alan's son, whom IIRC is a BA Captain.

Since October last year I have had one return trip from Hobart to Aberdeen (20,000+ nautical miles), two return trips to Perth (4,000+ nautical miles), and two return trips to Broome (7,000+ nautical miles).  With my new job I travel in a commercial airliner every fortnight (to and from Broome).

National and international, work and play all the way up to Qantas Frequent Flyer Platinum. I've forgotten how much I've flown - quite sad, really, most of it by myself and reminds me of a movie I saw once.

* Case in point: posting from the Virgin Club lounge at Melbourne Airport!

People who fly for a living or are in the armed forces don't count in this pee'ing contest. Yer gotta be a paying passenger to enter.

It's a very nice lounge, much nicer than QANTAS - no wonder they're in trouble.

I literally went to sleep sitting up in the Ansett Club Lounge at Brisbane airport once, waiting for my flight back to Sydney. Woke up to my name being paged over the loudspeaker.
Then had to do that horrible thing where you walk on board the palne with every other passenger already seated and giving you the evil eye for holding them up.

In all my travels, I never heard any TAA staff singing, especially the baggage handlers.

I've imagined lots of British Airways baggage handlers laughing, though. :scared:
