Hi everyone

Just joined and first to admit I'm not crash hot with computers.
So still familiarizing myself with how the forum works.
Picking up my new 2014 MY14 crdi Premium this Tuesday so quite excited.
Really want to look after the car.  Can anyone point me to any reading about bedding the new diesel in?

Hi Zoltan,

Not sure if you're familiar with Diesel engines. Regarding running in, it's pretty much the same as a petrol engine. Avoid labouring, high speed acceleration, and excessive revs and or braking.

Power is delivered at much lower engine revs than petrol, so anywhere between 1500-2500 would be considered normal initially. The turbo begins operating at approx 1900 rpm. Treat your engine gently and if you've been doing high speed travel, allow the engine to idle for about 1 minute to cool the turbo shaft, otherwise the oil can cook, form baked on deposits on the shaft and eventually lead to turbo failure. Diesel engines take 10-15 k kms to loosen up and give their best fuel efficiency. They are by design a long life engine, because the fuel they burn is actually oil.

 :welcum: Zoltan,

Phil has given you the good oil on running in a diesel.  Follow his advice and you can't go wrong.

What colour are you getting?  Wife has the light blue, I think it is called sky blue Premium diesel auto.  I love to drive it when I can.

We're getting white to match the new X3 delivery date on that yet to be advised.
Funny thing was when I reviewed the i30 I found a lot of things that reminded of the beamer!

Yes, perhaps the Beamer prompts are not accidental - it's a 130i i30 after all. :victory:

Modern cars don't need a lot of running in.

As regards the turbo cool down, the only time you would have to be careful (in my opinion) is if you were pushing it hard through a mountain pass and pulled up at a layby for a call of nature OR pushing hard on the highway and pulled into a Roadhouse.

Most of the time if you are driving hard there would be a period of slower driving/traffic before you come to a complete stop. :victory:

Yeah Phil's given you some good starting advice. You won't get the fuel economy that hyundai boast about ever. But you can get close, but will take you like Phil said about 15000km before you see it. All diesels no matter which brand of car are like that.

Congrats on the car. You will love it :goodjob2:
