John,I will be amazed if the quote from a dealer comes in under $1000,when I was looking into the I30's some time ago,the cheapest quote I could get for a petrol timing belt was $800,get all the correct details,I would suspect the cheapest way would be to obtain the belt yourself and then find a cheaper reliable accredited mechanic to do the job
It's not a big job. Haven't done it myself, but watched a mechanic at one of my places of employment do it relatively quickly. Any workshop which is Repco accredited will have access to an on-line guide for replacing the belt, along with printable diagrams. Can't be sure, but IIRC, less than $500 including a belt from Repco.
This any good to ya? Timing Belt KIT KIA Cerato Hyundai Coupe Elantra Lantra Tucson KTBA177 | eBay
I assume the 72 month rule, is because the belt is under constant tension 24/7 and this has an effect on the belt. It is a highly stressed component so keeping it healthy is a wise move.
Not hard to change a timing belt, but if the drive teeth have wear you have to change them too. some timing belt kits include water pump & new belt drive gear & thats why more expensive . my father got a spare timing belt for one of his Hyundai's that used a belt drive cam. from Gates in USA a lot cheaper, than the hy dealer was asking
