Easy. I did that and wired it through one of the screwholes at the back of that compartment down behind the console and to a USB adapter wired to the back of the cigarette lighter.. Total cost: $5 :victory:

Sorry if I sound ignorant but what is the purpose of this mod?

I see some great things with this mod:

There's no visible power cables for the GPS.

When arrived, you just close the lid and no one can see you've the GPS mounted. No need to remove the GPS Mount from the windscreen when parked somewhere.

Maybe it's just me, but I hate to leave the car in a parking lot with a visible GPS Mount or power cable as there's too many people not knowing the difference between your's and mine... :disapp:

I'm trying to visualise how this works, but failing miserably.

My i30's dashboard storage isn't deep enough to store much of anything really. And on warm days things in there melt (badly warped Shell fuel card, for example). Certainly, my TomTom won't fit in there.

      Caloundra, Queensland.
My TomTom fits. Lying down the lid closes happily. Or I can open it and sit the unit up and it's easily visible.
But I normally keep a amall pair of binoculars in there. The heat hasn't affected them in several years.

But I must admit,  can't visualise the purpose of the perspex above.

Hello could u send me a pic of the way u did it please
Search 'GPS' and you'll see an early one of the result, although it looks much cleaner and more elegant now.

Top Pocket
1. Unscrew the 2 screws under the rubber mat and remove the panel.
2. Come back to this when the rest is done.

GPS Cable
1. Put your original existing car adapter cable away in the box and make a new one from a cheap micro-USB cable and USB adapter ($5 at Cheap As Chips or Reject Shop).
2. At the power end of your cable cut off the standard USB head and feed the bare end down through the left screw hole of your top panel and through the corresponding threaded hole in the metalwork until you can reach it from below.
3. Pull away the panel with the two power (cigarette lighter) sockets and solder the bare +5V and GND ends of your cable to the corresponding pins in your USB adapter circuit.
4. Solder the +12V and GND pins from your circuit to the corresponding points behind the left power socket on the panel.
5. Reassemble everything, using one screw in the right hole of the top panel only.

GPS Bracket (what I did anyway)
1. Put your suction bracket back in the box next to your original cable.
2. Using a piece of coathanger wire and a pair or two of pliers, fashion a low profile bracket that will situate the GPS at the right height and hanging from the gap behind the lid latch.
