Just throwing it out there ... GD GPS unit in FD?

I don't know if it would be possible...

But I'd love to change the head unit in my FD i30. The cheap chinese head units look tacky and I haven't heard anything great about how they perform.

It would have been awesome if a company made a mould that would fit the GD GPS unit into an FD fascia.

Anyone heard of anyone doing this?

I really like the functionality of the new stock head units these days.

Looks like a promising sideline for an enterprising Victorian! :whistler:

I would love to know how expensive it would be to produce a mold for it and how many units would need to be justified to make it viable.

And of course if it even is possible.

My partner and I are going to purchase an i30 Elite Diesel in the next month or so and He will have this fancy GPS ... and I've got... a crap blue screen stereo with awful bluetooth... I'm slightly jealous ... YES!

Get chummy with your dealership and ask them to call you in when they have any head unit jobs. You may have a good look at the compatibility details. Frankly, I don't see much sense in the model redesign making any changes to the form and fit of the new unit. Do you have a 3D printer? :whistler:

You would probably be better off going for an after market one and getting a fascia to fit.

There would be a whole lot of hurt trying to retro fit an Fd.

Oh and there have been some problems with the Hyundai GPS that wouldn't be covered by warranty if you retrofitted it.

I think you would be happier doing a lot of searching for a quality unit that will fit you space. Ther must be a Euro design out there somewhere. The factory GPS is a monster to update 1 hour + apparently and there is plenty of discussion here about niggling worries that some owners have. I'm pretty sure that factory GPS does not have spoken street names. Given the size of the job ahead of you, I think you may be disappointed, just my opinion, of course.

It does sound like you'll be directly competing with the Chinese solutions even on fascia panel. Tough to beat. :undecided:

If you're going to that much trouble, go all out and deck out the interior to match NCC1701D  :winker:

I thought it was actually Korean?
And I for one am actually quite happy with it's performance....  :goodjob:
I had a friend comment just the other day about how good it sounded...

I thought he meant the after market ones. We already know he's not impressed with the OEM one.

The nav in the GD does feature spoken street names, and it does a pretty good job at pronouncing them as well.

Actually come to think of it maybe it doesn't? I really can't remember its been so long since I've used it... I can imagine the car saying the street name but maybe its just me reading the name off the screen in the nav lady's voice lol. I'll have a look tomorrow if I remember to confirm.

My model provides full flexibility with your choice of GPS hardware and software. That's what you get with FD superiority. :victory:

I know my mate's doesn't, but it could have been updated since, so if you're right, I'm happy to be corrected.

My GD doesn't speak street names.

Really?  My older i40 speaks some of them, not all, but it does say the main routes, can make for a bit of a laugh as it deals with Scottish words
