Spare tyre: space saver or alloy?

My spare is full sized, just on a steel hub

Why is mine a space saver on a steel rim if yours is full size??

When I have the rear seats flat I have a near perfect flat floor.
So is yours slightly raised in the hatch area of the boot?

My wording mistake. It is a space-saver but a full 17". Very narrow like a pram wheel

Anyway, I just hope I never need to have to use it to test this ESP off theory

Can you GB Gentlemen show a pic of your rear floor you must have a lower floor than we have in Australia. most say they get an allow spare same as what they have on the car.
mine is an SX and i got a full size 15" steel rim spare but floor would be higher less luggage space. but think in australia we need a full size spare as we might be a long way from anywere when we get a flat tyre, but in GB you would always be close to somewhere you could have it fixed i would imagine.

SX and SLX have full sized spares (the SLX has a full size alloy), whereas the SR (top of the line) i30 has the space (and I assume weight) saving tyre.

Here in Australia the SR come with the same alloy that's on the vehicle for the spare.
Infact the whole Hyundai range here comes with the same Tyre/wheel that's on the vehicle as the spare.
There is no spare/weight savers!

Our Tiburon purchased new in 2006 has a space-saver for a spare. We've had to use it.
So I'm not sure you're right about the whole model range in Oz, Duckman.
And I just checked Hyundai Australia website, which says current model has a space-saver.

Thanks Recall Boy, thats what i wanted to see, looks lightly deeper, my floor is leavel, when i lift up the floor to expose the spare i have plastic storage compartments to store things below the floor and around the full size spare.
but after next weeks first birthday cellibration, for Besty. if i don't get a flat before next week it will mean i have hauled the weight of that full size spare around all year for no reason

Are you sure? I was speaking with the sales guy when I bought my SLX, and he said that the SR is equipped with the space saver. He could be wrong, and I'm not questioning you

I checked my SR which I bought in Feb 08 and it has a full sized spare but on your standard rim, not an alloy.

My MY08 SR (Built July 08, Compliance August 08, Purchased 30 March 09) has a full-size 17" alloy spare exactly the same as the other 4 wheels (including the chrome inserts).

I wasn't refering to back in 2006, I was refering to the current range. Thats like me saying Theo whole Range is now avalible with esp and you replying with "BUT back in 1981 they didn't have ESP across there whole range".
BUT the whole available range here now in Australia comes with a space saver.

The salesman is lying to you. The SR wouldn't be able to get a 5star ancap safety rating with a space saver.

Those people who didn't get the same alloy as there spare as they have on there vehicle have been ripped of they are meant to have it!
Also every i30 SR I have ever seen has the full size alloy spare wheel. I have photos off 2 SR's i just went and checked and both have it. If anyone wants to post the photos just let me know

Ok I have been looking around the internet and speaking to a few people I know about the SR and they all have the full size alloy spare. It seems that 99% of them come with the same wheel that comes on the vehicles. And the other 1% come with a 15inch black stock rim. The hyundai Australia website says that the all there vehicles come with a black 15inch alloy as a spare. Hyundai don't have space savers. So anyone who has been giving a space/ weight saver should speak to there dealer.

having a full spare and not a spacesaver is an option that strongly appeals to me as a possible buyer
i do a lot of highway driving around central Q on some pretty crappy roads and i wouldn't feel hugely comfortable relying on a space saver tyre

from memory every i30 i've looked at to date including the wagon has had a full size spare, can't recall whether it was alloy or normal or whatever as i don't tend to pay attention to that stuff

eye - I was surprised to discover today that I have a full size 15" alloy spare, yet my i30 is the same trim level as yours except petrol. Purchased August 2008.

I am upset NOWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!

Mine was 1 of the first in the UK, Diesel bought is September 2007.
They must have changed this in later models.

I hope this was reflected in the price I paid, i.e half a wheel rim and tyre.

If not I'm going back for a moan.

L30N - Just as a check. Do you have the moulding under the boot floor thereby lifting the floor up and removing the slight lip I have when the rear seats are down?

<Start rant> I wouldn't have bought an i30 if it had a poxy space saver. What really makes me cringe is when I see a space saver on the FRONT of a car. I mean, seriously, how many people actually know that: you should NEVER put the space saver on the front, you should NEVER exceed 80km/h while a space saver is fitted and you should NEVER leave the space saver on the car longer than is necessary, i.e. driving your car to the nearest tyre repair shop? OK, so it is a hassle if your front tyre is flat, to take the rear wheel off, put the space saver on the rear, and move the rear wheel to the front. But NEVER, EVER put the space saver on the front - it affects the steering and handling. I can't imagine a space saver lasting five minutes in the summer here, when the temperature is 45C+ and the bitumen is melting. The bloody things should be banned. Hyundai gives us a full-sized spare, a Toyota Yaris has a full-sized spare, but a Falcon has a space-saver and some cars have a can of foam or run-flat tyres. Absolutely ridiculous. <End rant>

Just out of interest, does anyone know how far you can drive on a flat, run-flat tyre? I wouldn't think they'd be very useful if you're 200km from the nearest tyre shop.
