Hi all

My power window on the drivers side broke yesterday.  There was a loud crunching noise when I flicked the switch to wind the window up.   It almost sounded like some of the glass was being shattered inside but not sure.  There window is now unable to be wound up  and is loose and floating around in the side door. 

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are about getting this repaired.  should I go to an auto electrician or do you think it would be best to get this repaired at Hyundai.

I've done a lot of my wife's SEAT Cordoba windows and that's exactly what it's like when the cable system inside goes all wrong. I've even had a small block of wood inside the door cavity propping up her glass until I devised the fixes.

The smart ones here like Phil will dig out some diagram and a procedure that may involve removing the inner door panel so that you can replace bits inside.

I really don't expect the glass to be broken.

It's been covered recently, however, I don't think it's a job for just anyone to perform, not sure if I would tackle it.

From memory, it all boils down to some plastic clips that transfer the motor force to the window. They get tired and break, I believe.

thanks guys.  I don't think I would be able to fix this myself, seems a little bit fiddly and complicated.  Will call Hyundai tomorrow to find out what can be done.
It's a shame I am just out of warranty too

Depending on how well you know your dealer, whether you have reported the window before and not "fixed" and how long out of warranty it may be worth a try.

It's definitely not a job for the faint at heart.

How long out of Warranty are you? What is your service history with the dealer like?
It sounds like you will require a window regulator and they're not what you'd call cheap.
Best bet would be to get it looked at, they will be able to chock it up for you and give you a price on parts. If the price floors you I'm sure you could find a used one at a local wreckers. But that would come with not knowing how long the part will last and if the wrecker can get it out without damaging it.
Third option and very much a long shot is trying for "good will" warranty but your service history will need to be excellent and only just outside your 5yrs. Very very long shot as Hyundai are extremely strict with Warranty.

Sorry to hear of your trouble if they won't do it under warranty hopefully they will try nad help you a bit with the cost.. Shop around..

Well I got the window repaired today and it cost $450.  It was the regulator that was broken.  The car is 6 months out of warranty so no discount unfortunately.
I also asked them about another problem with the windows where the main driver switch panel can only wind the other windows down but not up.  You can only wind them up using the control on that window.  cost to get that fixed was $550 so I said no thanks as it's not critical and I will try to fix myself.

Definitely try it yourself or wait until I'm there next year. $550 is ridiculous.
