Hey all,

Hopefully this is the right bit of the forum for this.

So we want to bring our i30 to the UK and register it here. We got the speedometer sorted out, the only bit that's left (I think), is the headlights.

Since we're from the continent, the lights dip to the right. Looking at the requirements for registration, the lights here will have to dip to the left.

I contacted a local Hyundai dealer to adjust them, but they said that they'd have to replace both headlights (quoted at £350 each ).

My question is, can the headlights be adjusted or will we have to replace the headlights?

Kind regards,
Omni

Adjustment is not possible, you will need new/other headlights.

Maybe get some from a wrecker or upgrade to HID now that you have to change them anyway...

Hey Asterix,

First of all, thank you for such quick reply.

Looks like a replacement is in order then, will ask the dealer for quotes on the different types of headlights. (also, out of curiosity, do you reckon  these would fit? And not be a nuisance or anything but how can they claim these are both european and uk road legal? Isn't the kick up different?)

(Also, and I know this is a bit off topic but how do you find anything for the 2012-onwards i30? Every time I look something up, the 2012 prior model pops up.)

Do you have the older or newer model?

Probably a good idea if you post a pic of the front of you i30 for people to be sure.

Newer model (like this one).

Yeah I've been meaning to post some pics but a dark garage doesn't really make the i30 shine :) )

Is your car right or left hand drive?

I ask because if left hand drive you may not feel comfortable on the uk roads especially with forward vision having clear view of the road ahead.

As you have the new model (the GD) the first link you posted will not fit as they are for the early model (the FD)

Left hand drive.

While it's tricky in the beginning, we've been driving left hand drive here for a bit and after a while you get used to it (and you become extra careful when you think of overtaking someone, because dead spots are a thing).

I know some French cars have a lever of some kind on the back of the light assembly housing to switch from RHD to LHD maybe some OEM parts for the i30 have that as well...

Must assume that the factory fitted lights on your i30 don't have that option as Hyundai claims new are needed.

Have you considered the insurance situation?

The reference to Euro compliant relates to the general legislation for headlamps.  As they are described as UK  they will be left dip lens.

A UK MoT test can be passed with dipped beam 'converters' fitted but they are actually diffusers rather than converters so it would depend on the tester's decision to whether the asymmetric kick up was eliminated..

The advert for the lights shows a generic picture and is headed 2007-2013,

In the body of the advert you can select either the 2007-2011 FD model - which is not your's
or the 2012-1013 model - GD model which are the ones you want.

Hence it looks as though they can supply the correct lights. Why not telephone them to double check?

Sorry to ressurect this kind of old thread, but I've have some developments.

I've asked the local Hyundai dealership for a quote on the possible headlamps for the i30 GD. However the sales person came back to me stating that he has to headlamp options but doesn't know which one would fit the car as he doesn't have a i30 chassis number (go figure).

Any thoughts/help you can provide?

I'm thinking of contacting a different dealership by the way, I'd assume finding the chassis number of a i30 for a Hyundai dealership would be as easy as walking to the show room.

Regards

A common problem as dealerships rely on chassis numbers to identify the correct vehicle.
However, as you state, they only have to look at a similar model at their premises to identify something as generic as a headlamp.

Have you considered using a French ex pat forum to swop your headlamps although a GD i30 may be pushing your luck a wee bit!

www.frenchentree.com may be useful.

So what happens to all the vehicles crossing the channel, in both directions

you suppose  to fit diffusers, if i go over the channel i'm suppose to fit diffusers to throw the beam to the right and visa versa someone coming over here, but to tell you the truth not many do, i use to drive over to Italy in my truck and i never had diffusers fitted, all i did was have the beam shining down as low as it would go using the levelling switch but i still got drivers coming towards me flashing their headlights at me.

When i did my quad headlamp conversion on my astra i bought them from Germany and there was a little lever behind the unit and i could change the beam throw from left or right and maybe the ones above may be the same but as AlanHo said its best to contact the seller for verification

Have you tried to adjust the dip beam to see how far you can get the beam to go to the left, you might have enough adjustment to achieve this, and i would think the main beam beam should be easily achievable,  Its been 30 yrs since i worked in a workshop but if i remember correctly   the dip beam setting was 30 deg left and 30 deg low and main beam was around 3deg left and low, but that was then  maybe it changed nowadays

The lights need to be redesigned to cater for both driving scenarios, OR worldwide, all drivers should drive on the Left (as in correct).  side of the road.

There are no diffusers to be fitted (low beam doesn't use a diffuser at all - it's a projector).

if you adapt the lights temporarily this is done by creating a shadow mask to block the high corner beam. because the vertical cut-off on the i30 low beam is so well defined this is easy to do without a kit as long as you use some tape that wont hurt the polycarb light covers.

This is not a long-term solution though. it risks the glue etching the lens and you loose that valuable hi-side.

whole new light units is the only permanent solution possible.

Thank you all for the input, I've sent the dealership point out the fact that they *have* i30s there and should be able to look it up.

Nonetheless, what intrigues me is that in the i30 GD manual it states that the headlights were designed to be used on both driving styles (left and right) (I'll update with the manual's description later today).

Also if anyone's interested (or if anyone has a i30 GD 1.6 and wouldn't mind checking) these are the headlamps' numbers:

First set: (92101A6000 92102A6000)
Second set: (92101A6010 92102A6010)

On my 2012 GD 1.4 petrol the stickers have the following:

off side (right looking forward from drivers seat)
bar code - R009H2 010V
H2R
GDe 920102A6030
R009H2 010V

Near side but can't see full number as the sticker is part covered by a post for the garage plug in unit.
bar code - L009H2 00UC
H2L
GDe 9201??????? L009H2 ????? - Can only see part of the number
L009H2 ???? - Can only see part of the number

Hope this helps

I have to say you guys are amazing. If you're ever near Woking and fancy a pint let me know, I'm buying.

I'm going to have a look at my headlamps when I get home. If the parts' numbers is anything like the instrument cluster, they should be the exact same aside from one number/letter.

Hopefully will get this sorted soon.

Thank you all again, I'll update the thread once I have news.

So the plot thickens.

Just checked the car's headlamps and they match the first set of numbers given by the dealership (92101A6000 92102A6000).
However the barcode, on the right one, is R009H3 22VH H3R.

Given the information provided by @eye30, his barcode states that it R009H2 010V H2R. And by looking at this picture from a i30's headlamp on eBay, we can conclude that the actual difference is in the H(2/3)R code.

Therefore, bottom line, they have to be changed.

Look to the right side of the 1st page, Headlight and Front fog light aiming for Europe. it shows you how to adjust the beam throw for driving in Europe, the same should apply for Europeans coming to the UK. page 2 is the continuation 3-5

How to align the headlights is on a different page

That page looks like normal headlight aiming guide (for Europe cars with H7 bulbs) to me. Are you sure the other page that doesn't mention Europe isn't for other markets like USA where the bulbs and units are different?

i'm just going off what's in the handbook, if his car has H7 bulbs which mine as it should do. This is for units without AFLS far right on the top page.

read instruction 5, its on the left of the lower page  it states which screw / bolt which in this case is No1 to 'adjust the beam left or right', No2 is to adjust the dip head up or down and No3 is to adjust the main beam up or down

No1 screw/bolt is the same for AFLS units just a different procedure

It is NOT possible to alter the asymmetric dip from left to right or vice versa by using the adjusting screws on the i30.  The lamps are marked with a horizontal arrow pointing to the side for which dip beam is set.  Any vehicle with fully adjustable dipped  beams that convert the asymmetric dip to left or right will have a double headed arrow pointing to left and right.  Other types of dipped beam converter only create a flat top dipped beam intended for short periods i.e continental trips and the lamps will have a single arrow.   The markings listed above are Hyundai part numbers whereas the lamps are marked with EU regulatory codes.  On my FD these EU markings are...

=D 1.0% O2AT o11a ODD HCR PL E13 17.5 12458 12459 ------>

The 1.0% refers to the dip angle which can be up to 1.3% on cars.  The arrow at the end is the dip direction.  On lights with dual dip it would be <-----> although there are now new markings of L and D.

More information here http://www.danielsternlighting.com/images/Codes.pdf

"Converters" sold commercially are virtually useless with ellipsoid bullseye lenses as they only partially diffuse the asymmetric flare and provide neither a flat topped beam nor a dip to the opposite side. Despite all the myth I have never been able to find any reference to anyone prosecuted in France  for not having converters on their headlamps.  Not really surprising as the French regulations, as do the UK regulations, only refer to not causing dazzle which  would need a policemen to be subject to the offending dazzle!
Lowering the dipped beam to its lowest setting is not advisable as it creates a situation where the lamps are inadequate for lighting the road ahead.

I have spent over forty years making multiple trips to the continent every year and have converted many different types of headlamp.  In the old days black tape would produce a flat top dip and I even modified the bulb flange to create a right dip.  Unfortunately, no longer possible on modern lamps..

UK MoT regulations permit the use of dipped beam converters on a  'temporary' basis (which is not defined) so this may be the way forward for OMNI at the moment.
