Johnno2 the early Australian car scene was hugely influenced by the American market ( Ford, GMH - GMC , Chrysler all have their origins in the US )  and the basic reason we're now favouring the small Euro and Asian cars is fuel costs and vehicle affordability "build costs"

Although I have owned more Ffords than anything, I actually like Fords, Holdens, Chryslers & Leylands.
I just love cars.
