Small engines with turbo suggests to me that cars are becoming increasingly throwaway, working the engine harder for shorter life.

That would depend entirely on design. It is popular nowadays to design items with a reduced price and lifespan, using plastic, where steel would have been used. Turbo petrol engines need not be short lived. Many turbo petrol engines in the past were never designed for the turbo and that DOES highly stress the whole motor and shorten it's life considerably, but they were not OEM designed.
