I just leave it to the garage to select the oil as i have confidence that they will use the correct oil/grade etc for my driving style

You have more confidence than me.

A Vauxhall dealer used semi-synthetic when fully synthetic was specified and my Hyundai dealer did the same with my first Hyundai Terracan.

Ever since I always ask what oil they are going to use

I always supply my choice of lovely oil for the car at service, which is most likely whisked away into their own car and replaced with some generic low grade Indonesian oil from Kmart. :Pout: :fum:

Jean is booked in for her 105,000 km service first thing Monday morning so I bought her a few litres of Shell Helix Ultra on the way home today.
I toyed with the idea of getting Royal Purple instead, because I've heard it's a very good premium oil, but I decided to stick with the tried and tested Shell.  :)

If it ain't broke....

The way you get your k's up, you could use olive oil, the engine wouldn't get cold that often.....

I allways make sure to of course chose an oil that meets the spec's, here C3 is needed because of DPF. Then I look at the different brands approval of the oil. If e.g the oil is approved for VW LongLife (30.000/2 year interval) then I believe it's good enough for my Hyundai as well.
i will however never buy the cheap stuff from the supermarked no matter which approvals printed on the label. They might meet the requirements, but for how long.

I have used Castrol for many years on my other cars but have found that the Hyundai better like the Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W/30.

Because of our winters with low temps below 0ºC and our summer vacations towing the caravan to warm places, +30ºC, I would like 0W/40 but can't seem to find any that meets the C3 classification.

Royal Purple  :undecided:     nothing wrong with it but I would rather change oil in a diesel 7500k than spend twice as much on RP and change at 15000k   Works out to the same price for those worried about money

Would you change RP at 7500 in a Hyundi    to me it would be a massive overkill ?  I would in the Pajero but the car cost $70000 and works a lot harder

I'm hearing you, loz.  I never put Royal Purple in my Hyundai, but probably would in my Commodore (at the next change) as it works harder than the i30.  I think you mentioned in a previous post on another topic that oil is one thing that people scrimp and save on, yet it is the thing that provides protection to your engine.  Carry the cost over the distance for the oil change (usually less than the cost of a tank of fuel, even for RP) and it works out at cheap insurance.

I first started using Mobil 1 5w30 in my 05 Elantra (Beta motor) then changed it to Castrol Edge 5w30. I sold the car with 130,000km on the clock and one of the cleanest engines you'll ever find with that mileage. The oil was always clear at every 7,500km interval and ran like the day I drop it out of the dealership. I even had Getz or 2 years and used it as well.

I have continued to use Castrol Edge (or whatever it is called these days) in our 2 i30 Diesels, except now I use 0w40 (of course the dearest one!) and still change it every 7,500km.

Some people say using a full sythetic is no go, It the only thing I have ever used and 10 years on every car I have put it in has been happy.

If I lived in Thredbo, I might convert, but not necessary at this time, we already have 40 protection.

What I like about 0w with modern motors the low visiosity oils such as 0w 40 the oil gets up to where it should be faster and starts doing what its ment to do this is so inportant with new VVT engines  once the motor is up to temp its like any other 40w oil

I cant see why theres so much resistance (ON THIS FORUM)  to 0w 40  must just be a missunderstanding  0w 40 isnt just for cold conditions ??

This gets back to viscosity, I don't need a thin oil rated to - whatever, when we simply don't experience those conditions here. What does a 0 oil do overnight in a freezing environment. It stays thin and drips back to the sump depriving top end components of any initial oil protection, as I see it.

European weather is another thing entirely and justified over there.

Makes me wonder why so much 0w 40 is sold all over Australia and the Middle East ?????????????????????????????????
