When I was in checking out the Sonata the other day.. I had a discussion about i30 resale values (sussing out trade in price etc..)

and the saleman (who is a straight shooter) was saying that the local dealer has tried to pick up a few second hand i30's from auctions but they are bringing too high a price to make them viable for the dealer to buy and sell at a profit...

So he was suggesting the i30's popularity would make it an attractive trade-in to the dealer and this would be reflected in a relatively good trade in price (especially the diesel)...

Problem here in UK is there is a minimum of £2,000 off the list price (£1,000 scrap scheme and £1,000 by Hy UK).

This will have a direct effect on 2nd hand prices and trade in as a new car is now cheaper to buy than a 2nd previously owned 1.

...which shows another way in which scrappage schemes are pure folly.

Resales for i30s are strong according to the people I know in dealer land, especially the diesels.

Those of us who were big shots and lashed out on SLXs and SRs (in Australia) have taken a bit more of a spanking than those who started lower with an SX.

The one to avoid secondhand is a petrol auto SX hatch. A lot of the secondhand ones are ex-rentals and they are good ones to avoid with barge poles. The fact that as the rental companies turn over their fleets there will be masses of identical-spec cars dumped on the market means that they will be the ones to suffer the biggest and most sudden drop in value. If you have any spec other than that though, I don't think that'll be a big issue.

I'm going to keep Crystal when the lease runs out (saving already) so I'll have her from cradle to grave and resale isn't much of an issue to me, but it's always nice to know that one has an asset that will be sought after.

A straight shooting car salesman?  Thats like a contradiction in terms if I ever heard one.  

People do tend to assume Hyundai's dont hold their value (including myself), but when I was looking at trading in the wife's Tucson a year or so ago, initially I thought the value was low until I compared Rav4, Kluger, Forrester, XTrail and outlander of the same year, percentage wise the Tucson was equal or better than the lot, including the Toyotas.  Have a look at www.redbook.com.au

In Bulgaria the dealers, when buy back the car,  proceed in this way:
- 1 year or 15 000km - 15%off of Value as new
- 2 year or 30 000km-  30% of Value as new.
and so on.

I think we would take a bigger hit in Australia than 15% after 1 year (as a trade anyway)

Hi all,

Been away from this forum for a while but the little i30 is coming up on 12 months old so time to see if it's worth hanging on to or updating... As Lucifer writes above, the Red Book is the bible in Au for car resale values, and after a bit of analysis what's really suprising (about the i30's) is the lack of any real difference in resale values right across the range. I've copied some stats below (all for 5 sp manuals because that's what I'm looking at - never owned an auto; no fun to drive) - I guess the only thing that really matters in resale is the percentage difference between cost and current value, and the first thing you notice on Red Book is how little this is - if selling a car in good condition (private sale) the variation across the i30 range only changes from 15% to 15.7%... and a similar difference if trading the car to a dealer (the range is 30.5%, to 32% off purchase price)

To me this really highlights the importance of negotiating a good deal to begin with - I was lucky to get the SLX for $20K brand new, and now after 12 months the book (private) resale value could be as much as $19,900 ... meaning the car might end up only owing me $100 :-)
