It was reported by CNN on 01/03/2015:

"Hyundai is recalling more than 200,000 vehicles that could have a power steering defect that increases the risk of a crash, according to documents posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Saturday."

Is the i30 same as the Elantra touring hatchback in US?

Is the i30 same as the Elantra touring hatchback in US?

:welcome: George... Yes it is! Great find!

This needs to be world wide!

Members in Australia the UK and other parts of Europe have had these failures (some outside warranty at considerable cost!) :disapp:

 :welcum:

That's an interesting find.   :goodjob2:

It doesn't, however, include the EPS problems experienced in Australian-delivered Hyundai vehicles (not only i30s).

Hyundai is well aware of the problem and needs to orchestrate a similar recall program here to bolster consumer confidence in their products.

Wonder if they are going to recall all the flex steering models because it doesn't only effect the USA as you can see in the Swedish test, or are they worried they will get hammered big style with big law suits if someone does get injured in the US.

HY have already been fined for their fuel consumption figures in the US and maybe they don't want a repeat

Yes, needs to be clear of all obstacles for some distance. Looks like the wheel was wrenched out of his hands when the failure occurred initially.

Good. Now Australia needs to recall.
My powerstreeing went while doing 100ks on the m1, two weeks ago.  I have a 2009 i30.
That was pretty scary, I spoke to the dealership who reset my codes ect and said my car was fine,  my powerstreeing came back and I shouldn't have a problem. Upon pick up the guy said you have lost it agin you need a new colomn and thats $3500. I was god smacked. After telling me my car was fine and gave my false hope. Ive since emailed Hyuandi Australia regarding this, as I am not the only one. Even the guy who fixes them said it's a common problem. If America has recalles Australia should too.

And this why i am not a fan of electric power steering. Electrics and electronics kan just fail without warning. You can check them, test them till you're blue in the face, but if it wants to break, it will.

Old-fashioned hydraulic power steering was something that could be checked and maintained much more easily and it stiffened up with speed (no comments, please.... i'm trying to be serious) without needing additional electronics (ie Flexsteer).

I agree, there's a lot to be said for devices that can be visually inspected and maintained. But alas, this is the way of the future. It is concerning, as the idea of buying a 2nd hand car for the kids to learn to drive and park, takes on a whole new meaning when any component which looks perfectly normal, could randomly fail and injure / kill someone, causing a myriad of problems for all concerned.

 :whsaid:

and in addition, the guys that come up with these "innovations" are engineers, they should understand the consequences involved with electronic and digital systems when they fail. God knows there are enough documented cases of electronics failing massively, causing potential (and even actual) life threatening situations.

I'm not even sure it's a money thing. It certainly has nothing to do with emmision control, which is why most of the sensors and computers are fitted to engines these days. Those systems can be defended. More a question of doing it because you can.

Anyway, if people don't complain in large numbers, then yes, it's the future. Problem there is.... who do you complain to ?

I have a 29 yo car that both my children used to learn to drive , They have both moved on to better cars. We had a fair bit of work done to suspension, brakes, engine & trans, to bring the car up to standard, cost about AU$3k. In the 9 years we've owned it, it has had only 1 failure, the electronic distributor reluctor. It is not fitted with ECU, BCM and all that other jazz. It will leave the family soon and become a restorer's delight. Cheap wheels for 9 years of service IMO.

Compare that with a modern car that has a steering failure that doesn't kill you or someone else. Price to repair about AU$3k and that's current price with parts available, then there's ECU, BCM and so on.  :fum:
