But seriously, after 3 years if you have really low mileage and a good Hyundai service history they might help you out. No guarantees tho.

Anything in the book you recieved with the car?

Nothing directly relating to the radio in mine but quote:

"....5 year warranty which protects against faulty materials or manufacturing defect"


I take this to mean anything provided as standar fit with the car at point of sale but not after market or extra's negotiated as part of the sale

According to Trading Standards (in the UK) most products could be covered for up to 7 years against faulty workmanship, there was quite a debate on some radio stations just a few weeks back. But the question then arises just what is faulty workmanship and wear/tear or misuse after a few years.

In the TV industry some manufacturer's would pay for a repair/replacement parts long after their guarantee had expired, others wouldn't give a week over the time stated. Now TV, video & audio equipment is so cheap (compared to say in the 70's when a CTV would cost the equivalent of two/three months wages) it's not worth the cost of the repair in many cases. Sadly the motor trade has not kept pace.

If they are adamant Sir eye30 I would suggest, unless he's already done so, that your friend gets in touch with the local Trading Standards at the County Council.

Some years ago the fuel pump on my sons Citroen diesel packed in after about 18 months and the dealer said it would not cover, I got in touch with Citroen and they agreed to have it examined. Result was it was found to have been a fault and they covered the cost with my son paying only the labour costs.

From my discussions with Hyundai people it seems that they are most concerned about CD player lasers and the like which do have a limited useful life. You can see why they might want to limit their liability to replace stereos after 4 1/2 years and potentially 500000km of in-car use due to lasers failing.

Interesting there is no mention of the limitation of the warranty on the stereo in your book - are there any limitations listed? In Australia, our books do list some of the things that are not covered by the full 5 years/unlimited km warranty.

Might be because over here some of our cars do such large mileages.
