Yesterday one of the boys phoned me and said; My car (1998 VW Golf 1,6 petrol) just gave a big loud bang underneath and the engine stopped. Just before that I tried to accelerate but it wouldn't.

I told him not to try to start the car again as I suspected the timing belt to haven given up. Luckily it wasn't and today I took a look at the car and it seems like the content of the catalytic converter went loose and made it to the first muffler and stuffed the muffler resulting in the muffler to blow open. Here's the muffler and some of the parts I took out of it:

I think wear and tear have gotten rid of the platinum @ 303.000 km....

Not cheap those catalytic convertors but a lot cheaper than the timing belt breaking and mashing the engine up. At least you can sing ( always look on the bright side of life )  Great photos by the way.
