A good news story.

My wife’s car is a 2010 i30CW 2.0L auto. Purchased July 2010 with a 5 year warranty so expiry will be July 2015.

Last week the radio died - all fuses etc checked ok. Local dealer had a look and said that the head unit was dead with an “open circuit”.

At that point we were informed that the radio warranty was only 3 years - we had failed to read the fine print.

We are both well into our 70’s and have owned many vehicles - and the radios have always outlasted the vehicles (at least while we owned them).

The dealer obviously felt sorry for my wife and said that he would try to get Hyundai Australia to at least come to the table and share the cost of replacement.

An aftermarket sound system was considered but the fascia layout would be a problem - we were not ready to go down that path just yet.

I contacted the Australian Hyundai website and received an email that nearly knocked me off my chair - a replacement radio (non-bluetooth as fitted) was $2,569.16 including GST - and that did not include fitting. That figure is not a misprint.

Before i had collected my wits and readied a sarcastic response my wife received a phone call from the local dealer that Hyundai Australia had agreed to supply and fit a replacement radio AT NO COST. The job was completed today and all is again well with the world.

Yes, Santa does exist and so we would like to say a big thank you to the local dealer Zupps of Aspley and to Hyundai Australia.

I don't know how Hyundai manage to come up with these horrendous prices but at least they were kind enough to replace the unit for free

I had my FD-01 Radio replaced free of charge by  Cartronics (the manufacturer) met the owner. Top bloke

A car stereo should last a lot longer than that so if Hyundai hadn't stepped up no doubt Consumer Affairs may have had something to say about it...

I concur - I was given a quote in writing (actually PDF) of a similar figure when I asked about the cost of an FD-01 (bluetooth).   I am not sure if they just have very limited stock - or that is the price quoted outside the service centre network (to discourage not using a service centre?).

In any case it is great they have replaced the radio for free.

Did not buy the car from them - used Union Shopper as my wife was a nurse at the time - but have had 2 of the 5 services there. Servicing depends on where we are at the time. Have had other cars e.g. Holden serviced there over 20 years but again not on a regular basis. My wife is determined to have her 5 year end-of-warranty service done there which is fair enough.
