have a nasty knocking in my front end(i think drivers side)... going to look at it today and try and figure out what it is..

driving along (coasting) noise is present by the slightest bumps in the road (even the road reflectors), under load or braking it isnt as bad or even there... going over speed bumps/in or out of driveways it does it too.

doing my head in.

is there anything in particular i might have to look for other than the obvious.

springs/shocks seem fine, wheel bearings are good. will be checking and ordering new sway bar links/bushes just to be safe. and checking control arms and even tie rods.

can that RH hydraulic engine mount be a cause as well? not sure how to tell if its buggered.

any help would be great.. car is up in the air at the moment

Could it be in the steering? There is a TSB (technical service bulletin) for the FD having a rattle in the steering column, but usually comes on gradually and not super loud.

Hard without hearing it.
Turn the steering to full lock either way to access the swaybar. Get a friend to rock the car sideways and feel the swaybar and link rods. You'll be able to feel any movement causing knocking.
Another possibility is strut tops but hard to check them in the vehicle.

thanks for moving the post...

not entirely sure.. i had it jacked up and yanked on the links and there was no sign of movement, only the usual bush travel, they seem pretty stiff.

ive uploaded a video to youtube.. :link: Hyundai i30 knocking/rattling problem - toddl3y - YouTube

i can force it to happen by driving 15-20 km/h in 4th gear. and while driving along, if i take my foot off the throttle after a small amount of load it knocks again. (this happened in my previous car - sss pulsar, was fixed by putting in solid rear engine mount) but the rear mount in the i30 looks fine from visual inspection and it predominantly in the drivers side.

how much travel should the hydraulic mount have? i can move it around by hand... i thought an engine mount should be stiffer than that.

Does it only happen when you drive over cattle grids??? But seriously, very odd, but hard to diagnose via a video over the internet. I wonder if any tech savvy members live nearby and can help with a live diagnosis  :undecided:

i cant wait any longer to be honest, its getting worse, so im going to see Hyundai and see what they think today to find out. its happening under braking, acceleration, corners, uneven/rough surfaces, driveways.

hopefully they can shed some light.

as for cheap... i cant afford a diagnosis... lol let alone the service centre to do the work for me.

the amount i was quoted for diagnosis today shocked me enough to go and price parts to replace in the front end. and guess what. its cheaper to buy new parts and fit them myself.

worst case its a strut making the noise. im just going to change the parts that i know would have a high possibility of causing that kind of noise and go from there.

service advisor - "$135 to diagnose, minimum 2 hours diagnosis, then cost of parts to fix the diagnosed problem plus labour and then if a knock or noise is still present, another $135 an hour to diagnose and then further parts and service costs"

im a contractor and get maybe 1-2 jobs every 3 months... thats a bit much for me.

With what they pay their Technicians, can't see how they justify their charges!  :crazy1: :fum:

And I thought our hourly rates were high.
Wish I could be more help. Cant imagine you'd need 2 hours to diagnose a noise that is so obvious and easy to reproduce. Hour max, 10-15min driving plus 20-30min on the hoist going over front end.

Thats a bit stupid...''if a knock or noise is still present..'' then another charge to diagnose and parts .e.t.c................. well if the noise is still there then  wouldn't that cancel out the first charge since they didnt fix it right first anyway

Yeah the front end is all the same.
And once you've finished the swap you can send me all leftover suspension and brakes :)
