I'm baaaack!  Miss me?  Probably not ha ha.

Anywho, don't know how to really explain the problem.  I'm coming up to my 180,000km but seeing as that service will most likely cost me close to $900 (if not more), money which I do not have, I have asked that Hyundai do a 160,000km, as that should only be around $300.

My car is now 7 years old and out of dealership warranty, but wasn't happy with the last mechanic I took my car to, thus going back to Hyundai.

I know the timing belt needs changing, but I will discuss this with them on Wednesday and ask what absolutely needs replacing, but that they will need to discuss with me first.

So lately I've noticed my car sounds like a distant siren when accelerating.  I have no other way to explain the noise.  Anyone else notice this in their car?  And what it could possibly be?

Read here a while back that the siren sound is usually the turbo. Does it rise and fall with the revs of your engine and gears

If you have a 1.6 Diesel, they have a chain drive for timing and it shouldn't need replacing.

I booked the service online and they called me back and told me I needed the timing belt replaced...I dunno.  Will see on Wednesday.

Turbo?

As Phil said, as far as I can remember the 1.6 CRDi has a timing chain, not belt.  So the service centre could be telling porkies.

Likewise, if it is sounding like a siren, it could be the turbo on the way out.

Thanks....will report back Wednesday :)

Though if that is the case re turbo, how much could I expect the service to cost me?

They won't, but I'm always agreeable to that.

Seriously, If they're talking timing belts I'd be cancelling the service and picking someone who know more than they do. I presume this is not Hyundai !

At the distance you've traveled, the timing chain should be quite ok, so don't let them touch or charge you for labour or parts pertaining to the chain at all. Get another quote just to be sure. Also, there are usually savings if you can supply the correct oil and filters, not sure if you know what's required.

The correct oil for the Diesel is a B4 type, Full synthetic, Graded from 0-30, 5-30, or 5-40. 40 provides protection for freeway speeds and summer temps, so 30 would be ok at this time. Not sure what filters you would need, but at least an oil filter.

Definately call them back and get a quote on the service making sure they know its a Diesel.

A "siren" noise is quite possibly a turbo concern. See if it increases and decreases with engine rpm but with a second delay, not instantly.

There could also be a worn drive belt pulley or component bearing (alternator/aircon comp/water pump etc) or possibly even a transmission noise.

Good thought Rick, must remember that. Cheaper than a new turbo.

It's timing something anyway lol

And yes, it's the Hyundai dealership in Geelong.

I had dad listen to my car but we can't pinpoint exactly where it is coming from.

My "siren like" noise turned out to be a turbo bearing.  It was replaced under warranty, the job estimated to be worth about $3500.
It was an obvious noise, getting louder when under load or the A/C on.
Do a search on "turbo whistle".

Good luck.

I'm really dreading Wednesday.  I did find another post on the same/similar issue and he was quoted $4500ish from Hyundai, $1300 aftermarket.

I asked a friend for his opinion just going off my above description.  He said it shouldn't cost that much and if it does, they're ripping me off.

Where would I start looking for an aftermarket turbo?  I'm in Geelong.

Would it be rude to tell the service department not to dick around with me when it comes to servicing my car and only repair/replace etc if absolutely necessary?

As the car is out of warranty, you have the ultimate say on whether a repair is made or not, however, their experience should always be considered when deciding what has to be done. Regarding the turbo, member Rick has reported that his turbo sound came from some cracked intercooler pipes which would not be too expensive to replace if yours had the same fault. The intercooler pre-cools air for the turbo and is located on the battery side of the radiator, it is a mini radiator for air only. You should see some pipes top and bottom going to your air filter, these may be cracked and the turbo noise escapes through the crack.

If it turns out it is the turbo, definitely use another reputable repairer and get quotes for supply and fitting. Hyundai prices are way off the scale IMO.

I just don't want them to tell me something needs to be fixed, even though it can probably wait.  Like I said, funds are low due to job situation.

I will be taking for a second opinion if they can provide me with a list of what needs to be fixed and perhaps an estimate of the bill, if that is possible.

This is apparently what needs servicing:

180,000km service: http://www.fixedpricecarservice.com.au/ServiceSchedule.aspx?ServiceID=1058349

165,000km service: http://www.fixedpricecarservice.com.au/ServiceSchedule.aspx?ServiceID=1058348

Service cost according to Hyundai: $1100 for 180,000km.  $285 for 165,000km.

So just got my car back from service at Hyundai.  As my car is more near 180,000kms, I asked them to do a 165,000km service, as major one would cost me close to $1200 and this one cost me $310.  My car lately has been sounding like a siren, so I asked them to look into it.  My turbo bearings are on the way out.  To replace it, I'm looking at $4500 plus labour.  Refurbished one would be cheaper but will need a quote.  They'll need my car for 3-5 days.  They also said I need to have the major service done....neither of which I can't afford unless I rob a bank or use my Hawaii spending money...no fricken way.

They can't tell me either how long it'll last me...could be 2 months, could be a year. If it does go, it won't be good.

Probably be cheaper to trade in and get another car.

Just hypothesising ... if the turbo stops working, wouldn't your car still be driveable, just less powerful (but more economical)?

I did ask for a quote, so I hope he does find out and get back to me.

I would check out a performance workshop, not Hyundai. If the car's out of  warranty, you are not obligated to have them do the repair.

Performance workshops know how to get the best grunt out of a car, as you ae not seeking this, they would have a lot of experience in fitting a replacement turbo. Their common jobs include fitting a turbo to non turbo cars, so yours should be easy for them.

Have a look on Ebay for a replacement turbo and have a mechanic put it in.

Didn't someone on here replace the bearings in their turbo? Perhaps a fix is an option?

Thanks....after my rant on this on my FB page, I had a friend contact me.  His son is a mechanic so I'll go and chat to him about things.

I just hope nothing blows up in the interim because then I'll be well and truly farked.

Uncle called yesterday...said probably not worth fixing if I'm looking at getting a new car in the next 6-12 months...sorry buddy but I'm not rolling around in money like you are, I can't just rock up to a car dealership ready to handover money for a new car.

Even though I can get a 22% discount at Ford (I assume that's still the case), I still can't afford a new car.

BTW, yesterday's service cost me $310.
